John Cho Will Show You How to Wear 2018's Must-Have Track Trousers

An easy swap for your go-to denim that wins all the style points right now. (Also: they're cozy!)

If you've visited this website or shopped for clothes online or IRL lately, you've probably encountered a pair of pants similar to the ones actor John Cho wore at Build Series in New York yesterday. Part sporty track pant, part smart work trouser, they're a hybrid of two very distinct worlds (and thankfully, neither one is "athleisure"). In many ways this makes them easier to style, not harder. You can wear them with sneakers or dress shoes, sweatshirts or cashmere crewnecks, windbreakers or topcoats. Remember: In 2018 there are literally no rules. Still, if you're the sort of guy that doesn't mind a rule or two, and finds a pair of pants like this to be more perplexing than liberating, feel free to copy Cho's entire look from the head to toe. It's smart and simple, and a can't-go-wrong approach to wearing a very trendy item.

For starters, let's talk about color: there's none of it here. When you're a 45-year-old man (as Cho happens to be, despite looking 15 younger) and you're wearing a 25-year-old's pants (and these happen to be), sticking with black, white, and gray is a good way to bridge the gap. If you want to turn the volume up just a little bit, that's fine too. Swap in just one element with some color; a brighter sweater, a track pant with a contrast stripe down the leg, maybe a piece of jewelry. Or don't. Again, black, white, and gray always works.

The other thing that Cho did very right with this look is in choosing a sweater and sneakers that had the same personality as his pants. Both are sporty but refined enough for, say, the office and have zero bells and whistles to speak of. His choice of a black topcoat was a sharp way to finish the look too. We know you've already got one of these hanging in your closet so it should be an easy move to replicate. Once the weather warms up, try a denim jacket or just ditch the layer altogether. This outfit might have required some effort on your part, but that doesn't mean it can't look easy and effortless.
