For her second inauguration day outfit the First Lady of the United States Dr. Jill Biden championed another young American designer.

After she arrived in Washington wearing a tonal purple ensemble from New York-based designer Jonathan Cohen, Biden appeared at the official inauguration ceremony on Wednesday wearing a custom-made ocean blue wool tweed coat and dress set made by independent label Markarian.

Alexandra O’Neill, the New York-based design talent behind Markarian, said that she was “incredible humbled” to have been chosen for such an historic moment in American history.

In choosing to wear the coat, with its dark blue velvet collar and cuffs and subtly twinkling Swarovski pearl and crystal embellishment, Biden once again signalled that she is likely to champion lesser-known designers during her tenure in the White House; exciting news for the smaller American luxury fashion labels that have suffered so much through the pandemic.

According to O’Neill, the colour blue was chosen to signify trust, confidence, and stability.

The look was carefully crafted by a small team in the heart of New York City’s Garment Center and hand finished by O’Neill in her West Village studio. Biden finished the look with a pair of nude Jimmy Choo Love Pumps which she had also worn earlier that day.
