Jesse Lingard to Arsenal: West Ham loanee a target if Martin Odegaard deal fails

Arsenal are interested in a summer move for Jesse Lingard if they cannot keep loanee Martin Odegaard beyond this season.

Lingard has revived his career since joining West Ham on loan from Manchester United in January, providing six goals and four assists in eight games under David Moyes.

The Hammers, who were ten points ahead of Arsenal before their respective games on Sunday, are keen to sign the 28-year-old themselves if a deal can be struck with United at the end of this season.

No option to buy was included in the £3million loan agreement and United have given no indication to the player as to whether they will be willing to sell, loan out or keep the midfielder beyond this summer. Lingard is out of contract at Old Trafford at the end of next season.

Lingard’s fine form for the Hammers has earned a place back in Gareth Southgate’s England squad ahead of the Euros. Lingard made his first start for the Three Lions since 2019 when they faced San Marino last month, a game in which he was named man of the match.

Arsenal’s own January signing, Odegaard, has himself impressed in the capital and manager Mikel Arteta is desperate to tie him down to a permanent deal, though talks with his parent club Real Madrid will not be held until the summer.

Lingard has settled in London and at West Ham, living in an apartment block overlooking the London Stadium and forming a close bond with Mark Noble and Declan Rice. He spoke this week about how a change of scenery has aided his revival this season.

“I think environment is a big thing," Lingard told beIN Sport. "My house in Manchester is low down, you go down into the kitchen, it’s dark and in like a bunker.

“You being in that environment week in, week out, you know nothing else.

“Since I’ve moved to London I’m in an apartment where I’m high, there’s lots of light, I can see all the buildings in London, it makes you more bright and fresh."
