Yahoo Finance Jenson Button to battle Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg with new Extreme E team
Head to head: Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton now both have Extreme E teams
(Getty Images)Ex-Formula 1 world champion Jenson Button will go head to head with former grid rivals Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg after entering his own team in the Extreme E series.
But unlike Hamilton and Rosberg, as well as fronting up his own team, JBXE, in the new series, he will also be one of its two drivers.
Since quitting Formula 1 at the end of the 2017 season, Button has raced in a variety of series: the FIA World Endurance Championship, the Le Mans 24 Hours and Super GT.
But after taking part in the Baja 1000 in 2019, he said he was keen on more off-road experience.
He said: “JBXE has been a long time coming and I’m both delighted and proud to announce its formation and entry into the inaugural Extreme E Championship.
“I caught the off-road bug a few years back, which led me entering my own team in a few races, including the Mint 400 and Baja 100 and I absolutely loved it. It was around the same time I first heard about plans for Extreme A.”
The new series sees electric SUVs battling it out against each other in places around the world affected by climate and environmental issues to help raise awareness.
Button is the 10th world champion from various formats of motorsport to enter the series.
