ITV Studios has teamed up with web3 firm Reality+ to take the TV series Thunderbirds into the metaverse.

The British science fiction series that showcased characters such as Lady Penelope, Brains, and Jeff Tracy is to be rebooted within The Sandbox metaverse.

Tracy Island, the famous top secret international rescue headquarters from Thunderbirds, will be virtually accessible for fans to explore within The Sandbox metaverse from Monday 13 March.

Using a VR headset to enter the metaverse, players will be greeted by their favourite Thunderbirds characters and be able to go on quests around Tracy Island. Labelled the Tracy Island Sandbox Experience, the event will consist of 15 quests and mini-games.

Users will have access to Thunderbirds NFTs, or non-fungible tokens and will be able to visit a digital artwork gallery in the Thunderbird 2 hangar, including an exhibition curated by Lady Penelope herself.

Lucie Stoffers, head of brand and licensing at ITV Studios, said: "We are super excited to work with Reality+ and The Sandbox team to take the next step in our partnership and bring Thunderbirds to The Sandbox.

"This will allow Thunderbirds fans from around the world to discover Tracy Island and complete new rescue missions, as well as get access to a bespoke NFT collection."

Reality+ co-founder Tony Pearce said it was a "tremendous honour to be working with ITV Studios, not only to help them push the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of Web3 entertainment, but for the opportunity to take such an iconic TV show on an exciting new journey with its fans".

Fans will need a specific cryptocurrency to makes purchases within The Sandbox metaverse, called sand (SAND-USD).

SAND can be purchased from The Sandbox website or on major cryptocurrency exchanges, such as Coinbase (COIN).

What is the Sandbox metaverse?

Part virtual real estate, part amusement park, The Sandbox metaverse is a virtual environment in which players and brands can build, own, and monetise their experiences on the Ethereum (ETH-USD) blockchain.

Players can buy and own virtual land, which they can then develop and customise using the platform's building tools. They can also create and trade NFT assets such as characters, weapons, and vehicles, which can be used in their own games or sold to other players.

The Sandbox Metaverse also includes social features, such as chat and avatar customisation, which allow players to interact with each other in the virtual world. The platform is designed to be open and accessible to both gamers and developers, with a focus on community-driven content creation and collaboration.
