Today is national coffee day! Celebrate with your favorite brew or a free coffee from Dunkin Donuts, Krispy Kreme or a number of other local java houses. And while you relax with your cup o’ Joe check out these facts about the American coffee industry.

Coffee is big business in the United States…about 87% of Americans drink some form of coffee on a daily basis. That equates to a $30 billion industry.

And it’s not just a daily cup, the average coffee-drinker consumers 2.1 cups per day. That means that about 400 million cups are consumed each day. America’s most caffeinated city is Seattle, the home of Starbucks. Seattle and Tacoma are home to over 1600 coffee shops.

43% of coffee-drinkers make their own brew or snag a mug at work, while 26% purchase coffee from a large chain like Starbucks and 22% buy the stuff at small chains or independent coffee houses.

The amount that Americans pay for coffee is also on the rise, according to a Zagat survey people expect to shell out $3.28 per drink, up from $3.05 in 2014.

It’s not just America. Coffee is the second most traded commodity on earth, just after oil. There are 25 million coffee farms in 50 different countries. 40% of the world’s coffee, however, is grown in Brazil.
