Yahoo Finance Is Walmart Really Selling Céline? Sort Of
In shocking shopping news, you can now buy high-end brands like Cartier, Céline, and Miu Miu from Walmart. No joke.
It was recently brought to our attention that a $3,450 Céline handbag was available on Walmart’s website. Cue the jaw drop. Obviously stunned, we did a little research and reached out to the megastore to find out what was going on. Were they going high-end? Would we soon be able to find Louboutins in the store? Someone, please explain this crazy turn of events.
We spoke to a representative who informed us that while we weren’t seeing things, the Céline Phantom Handbag sold on Walmart.com isn’t exactly all it seems. “That bag is being sold by an independent seller in our marketplace,” Ravi Jariwala, a spokesman for Walmart, told Yahoo Style. The seller is called Stile and has no connection to Walmart, Jariwala confirmed, sort of like how random people can list and sell their products on Amazon, but Amazon also stocks and sells items itself.
Sellers can only join Walmart.com’s Marketplace if the company invites them. In order to qualify, they have to meet certain requirements. “Walmart picks marketplace vendors based on several factors, including what customers want and what they are searching for on the site,” Jariwala says. So, does that mean people were going to Walmart.com in search of Céline? Possibly!
Jariwala also informed us that Céline isn’t the only luxury brand available on the Walmart.com marketplace (which obviously doesn’t only sell luxury items). Through its Marketplace Sellers, he said, “customers can purchase items from high-end designers like Céline, Ray-Ban, Miu Miu, and Cartier, but the Marketplace sellers offering these products are responsible for the pricing, fulfillment and customer service of the orders.”
Miu Miu and Cartier on Walmart.com may sound like an oxymoron, but it’s true. We found this $18k Cartier Roadster on the website and a bunch of Miu Miu sunglasses — all sold by independent vendors.
