Ironman California race to kick off during Sacramento flood watch. Here’s what to know

With the 2021 Ironman California just days away from making its debut in Sacramento, it’s ill timing that Northern California is expected to endure rainstorms and a “bomb cycle.”

Also, known as bombogenesis, Northern California residents can expect intense rain from the bomb cyclone, which may result in slick roads, mudslides and ash and debris flows.

The National Weather Service in Sacramento issued a flood watch from 11 p.m. on Saturday to 5 p.m. on Monday and cautioned that the Southern Sacramento Valley will be affected. The flood watch also extends to portions of Northern California.

If you competing in the Ironman race, brace yourself to the conditions.

Slow down on the bike around corners and stay away from the slippery white lines. Don’t follow too closely to riders, wear a cap and sunglasses and keep warm by adding the right clothing for the conditions.

Rain or shine, 3,500 athletes are scheduled to compete in the Ironman race with swimming, biking and running Sunday. Be sure to check the sunrise, sunset and humidity level before joining the race.

Before the race, several events are scheduled including a pro-athlete panel, welcome ceremony and an Ironkids Fun Run.

So if you’re participating in the race or watching from the sidelines, here’s what you need to know about the weather forecast — provided by the National Weather Service and the Weather Channel — on the Ironman weekend and the expected rainy Sunday endurance race.
