Investors in Obsidian Energy (TSE:OBE) have seen massive returns of 393% over the past three years

Obsidian Energy Ltd. (TSE:OBE) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 11% in the last month. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been spectacular. Over that time, we've been excited to watch the share price climb an impressive 393%. As long term investors the recent fall doesn't detract all that much from the longer term story. The thing to consider is whether there is still too much elation around the company's prospects.

Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Obsidian Energy became profitable within the last three years. Given the importance of this milestone, it's not overly surprising that the share price has increased strongly.

It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. That said, we think earnings and revenue growth trends are even more important factors to consider. A Different Perspective

Obsidian Energy provided a TSR of 16% over the year. That's fairly close to the broader market return. We should note here that the five-year TSR is more impressive, at 36% per year. More recently, the share price growth has slowed. But it has to be said the overall picture is one of good long term and short term performance. Arguably that makes Obsidian Energy a stock worth watching. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Even so, be aware that Obsidian Energy is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis , you should know about...
