Investors in Materialise (NASDAQ:MTLS) have unfortunately lost 62% over the last year

Investing in stocks comes with the risk that the share price will fall. Unfortunately, shareholders of Materialise NV (NASDAQ:MTLS) have suffered share price declines over the last year. In that relatively short period, the share price has plunged 62%. Notably, shareholders had a tough run over the longer term, too, with a drop of 52% in the last three years. Shareholders have had an even rougher run lately, with the share price down 20% in the last 90 days.

So let's have a look and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Even though the Materialise share price is down over the year, its EPS actually improved. It could be that the share price was previously over-hyped.

The divergence between the EPS and the share price is quite notable, during the year. So it's easy to justify a look at some other metrics.

Materialise's revenue is actually up 17% over the last year. Since the fundamental metrics don't readily explain the share price drop, there might be an opportunity if the market has overreacted.

It is of course excellent to see how Materialise has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. This free interactive report on Materialise's balance sheet strength is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 22% in the twelve months, Materialise shareholders did even worse, losing 62%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 6% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. Before forming an opinion on Materialise you might want to consider these 3 valuation metrics.
