Investors Who Bought Unico American (NASDAQ:UNAM) Shares Five Years Ago Are Now Down 54%

Generally speaking long term investing is the way to go. But along the way some stocks are going to perform badly. To wit, the Unico American Corporation (NASDAQ:UNAM) share price managed to fall 54% over five long years. That's not a lot of fun for true believers. And we doubt long term believers are the only worried holders, since the stock price has declined 20% over the last twelve months.

Unico American isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

In the last half decade, Unico American saw its revenue increase by 3.9% per year. That's not a very high growth rate considering it doesn't make profits. This lacklustre growth has no doubt fueled the loss of 14% per year, in that time. We want to see an acceleration of revenue growth (or profits) before showing much interest in this one. However, it's possible too many in the market will ignore it, and there may be an opportunity if it starts to recover down the track.

The chart below shows how revenue and earnings have changed with time, (if you click on the chart you can see the actual values).

A Different Perspective

Investors in Unico American had a tough year, with a total loss of 20%, against a market gain of about 10%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 14% over the last half decade. We realise that Buffett has said investors should 'buy when there is blood on the streets', but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality businesses.
