Investing in Judges Scientific (LON:JDG) five years ago would have delivered you a 369% gain

For many, the main point of investing in the stock market is to achieve spectacular returns. While not every stock performs well, when investors win, they can win big. To wit, the Judges Scientific plc (LON:JDG) share price has soared 326% over five years. This just goes to show the value creation that some businesses can achieve. And in the last week the share price has popped 4.9%.

With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Over half a decade, Judges Scientific managed to grow its earnings per share at 173% a year. This EPS growth is higher than the 34% average annual increase in the share price. So one could conclude that the broader market has become more cautious towards the stock.

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on Judges Scientific's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Judges Scientific's TSR for the last 5 years was 369%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Judges Scientific has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 25% in the last twelve months. Of course, that includes the dividend. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 36% per year, is even more impressive. Potential buyers might understandably feel they've missed the opportunity, but it's always possible business is still firing on all cylinders. Before deciding if you like the current share price, check how Judges Scientific scores on these 3 valuation metrics.
