Should You Invest in the Invesco Dynamic Software ETF (PSJ)?

Launched on 06/23/2005, the Invesco Dynamic Software ETF (PSJ) is a passively managed exchange traded fund designed to provide a broad exposure to the Technology - Software segment of the equity market.

While an excellent vehicle for long term investors, passively managed ETFs are a popular choice among institutional and retail investors due to their low costs, transparency, flexibility, and tax efficiency.

Additionally, sector ETFs offer convenient ways to gain low risk and diversified exposure to a broad group of companies in particular sectors. Technology - Software is one of the 16 broad Zacks sectors within the Zacks Industry classification. It is currently ranked 5, placing it in top 31%.

Index Details

The fund is sponsored by Invesco. The index is comprised of stocks of software companies. The Index is designed to provide capital appreciation by thoroughly evaluating companies based on a variety of investment merit criteria, including fundamental growth, stock valuation, investment timeliness and risk factors.

Costs

Investors should also pay attention to an ETF's expense ratio. Lower cost products will produce better results than those with a higher cost, assuming all other metrics remain the same.

Annual operating expenses for this ETF are 0.58%, making it on par with most peer products in the space.

Sector Exposure and Top Holdings

Even though ETFs offer diversified exposure that minimizes single stock risk, investors should also look at the actual holdings inside the fund. Luckily, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis.

This ETF has heaviest allocation in the Information Technology sector--about 90% of the portfolio. Healthcare and Industrials round out the top three.

Looking at individual holdings, Vmware Inc (VMW) accounts for about 6.12% of total assets, followed by Microsoft Corp (MSFT) and Oracle Corp (ORCL).

The top 10 holdings account for about 46.12% of total assets under management.

Performance and Risk

Year-to-date, the Invesco Dynamic Software ETF has added roughly 34.19% so far, and it's up approximately 29.93% over the last 12 months (as of 12/10/2019). PSJ has traded between $68.31 and $104.07 in this past 52-week period.

The ETF has a beta of 1.13 and standard deviation of 21.04% for the trailing three-year period, making it a high risk choice in the space. With about 30 holdings, it has more concentrated exposure than peers.

Alternatives
