Vanadium One Energy Corp. (CVE:VONE) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 12% in the last month. But that doesn't change the reality that over twelve months the stock has done really well. To wit, it had solidly beat the market, up 92%.

With zero revenue generated over twelve months, we don't think that Vanadium One Energy has proved its business plan yet. As a result, we think it's unlikely shareholders are paying much attention to current revenue, but rather speculating on growth in the years to come. It seems likely some shareholders believe that Vanadium One Energy will find or develop a valuable new mine before too long.

As a general rule, if a company doesn't have much revenue, and it loses money, then it is a high risk investment. There is usually a significant chance that they will need more money for business development, putting them at the mercy of capital markets. So the share price itself impacts the value of the shares (as it determines the cost of capital). While some companies like this go on to deliver on their plan, making good money for shareholders, many end in painful losses and eventual de-listing. Some Vanadium One Energy investors have already had a taste of the sweet taste stocks like this can leave in the mouth, as they gain popularity and attract speculative capital.

Vanadium One Energy had cash in excess of all liabilities of just CA$24k when it last reported (November 2018). So if it has not already moved to replenish reserves, we think the near-term chances of a capital raising event are pretty high. Given how low on cash the it got, investors must really like its potential for the share price to be up 92% in the last year. You can see in the image below, how Vanadium One Energy's cash levels have changed over time (click to see the values).

Of course, the truth is that it is hard to value companies without much revenue or profit. Given that situation, many of the best investors like to check if insiders have been buying shares. It's often positive if so, assuming the buying is sustained and meaningful. Luckily we are in a position to provide you with this free chart of insider buying (and selling).

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Vanadium One Energy shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 92% over the last year. That certainly beats the loss of about 22% per year over the last half decade. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes.
