Mid-Autumn Festival is just around the corner and that means it’s time to get your supply of mooncakes to usher in the season. Many hotels have mooncakes on offer but with so many mooncakes to choose from, which one is really worth eating?

InterContinental Singapore recently unveiled a Mid-Autumn collection of classic baked mooncakes and snowskin mooncakes with new flavours that embodies tradition and contemporary modernity.

Brownie points goes to the fact that the mooncakes are encased in an intricately decorated and detailed treasure chest that has a slight Peranakan feel and a very elegant yet distinct old charm. If you’re keen, you can even enjoy them at InterContinental Singapore’s refurbished Lobby Lounge with a cup of tea.

Let’s kick off with InterContinental Singapore’s newest snowskin flavoured mooncakes 冰皮系列月饼:

Avocado with Chocolate Pearls and White Lotus Paste 鳄梨和巧克力珍珠与白莲蓉 ($66 for 4pcs)

This was a yummy sphere of soft white lotus paste and hints of avocado and chocolate. The flavours went really well together, especially since avocado is more bland whilst white lotus and chocolate are richer in flavour. The avocado’s smoothness also made the texture of this mooncake smoother than usual.

Sea Salt Caramel with Chocolate Pearls, Chocolate Truffle and White Lotus Paste 海盐焦糖巧克力珍珠,松露巧克力与白莲蓉 ($66 for 4pcs)

This was one of our personal favourites. The taste of caramel was really strong but was balanced by the sea salt. The chocolate truffle gave a decadent and modern twist to the traditional mooncake. Much better than just slabbing sea salt caramel on a waffle, this is a mooncake you will certainly want to try this season!

Sakura Peach with Pistachio and White Lotus Paste 樱花桃子和开心果与白莲蓉 ($66 for 4pcs)

The Sakura Peach was lighter in taste. It tasted really gentle and floral. The pistachio gave a really nice nutty touch and contrasted the smooth texture of the white lotus paste. The peach, however, was really mild, making the mooncake less fruity than we anticipated.

Yuzu Citrus with White Chocolate Truffle and White Lotus Paste 柚子和柑橘白松露巧克力与白莲蓉 ($66 for 4pcs)

The Yuzu Citrus mooncake was another mooncake that we were really impressed by. The Yuzu was subtle but fragrant in the mooncake skin. The acidity in this mooncake stood out, especially the lime-like centre which made this mooncake really memorable. This is perhaps the most unique mooncake we came across in the event. Balanced by white chocolate, this mooncake represents both Eastern and Western flavours, bringing the best of both worlds.

Signature Snowskin ‘Mao Shan Wang’ Durian Mooncake 冰皮猫山王榴莲月饼 *招牌* ($68 for 4pcs)

As a sucker for durian, this was undeniably my favourite. A decadent treat indeed, the durian mooncake had to be kept away because of its pungent smell and was only brought to us by request. Nonetheless, I loved it. Made with pure Mao Shan Wang durian extract, this mooncake is super indulgent and looks royal with gold dust sprinkled over it.

And now… presenting the classic golden baked Shanghai mooncakes with its maple-glazed crust:

Baked Mooncake with Assorted Nuts 传统五仁月饼 ($62 for 4pcs)

With a wholesome blend of almonds, walnuts, macadamia nuts and sesame seeds, this mooncake is truly for those who are nuts about nuts. This mooncake is a very balanced one as the saltiness of the nuts goes well with the sweetness of the lotus taste. It also crunchier than your average mooncake.

If you prefer something even healthier, go for the Baked Mooncake with Macadamia Nuts and Low Sugar White Lotus Paste 低糖夏果白莲蓉月饼 ($64 for 4pcs). The texture is similar but the mooncake is less sweet.

Baked Mooncake with Double Yolks and Lotus Paste 双黄红莲蓉月饼 ($62 for 4pcs)

If you love yolks, you are going to love this. With two egg yolks, this mooncake is the definition of maximum indulgence. If you love egg yolks but want something less sinful, get the Baked Mooncake with Double Yolks and White Lotus Paste 双黄白莲蓉月饼 ($68 for 4pcs).

Baked Mooncake with Single Yolk and Lotus Paste 单黄红莲蓉月饼 ($60 for 4 pcs)

If you like yolks but don’t love them enough to have two, get the clasic baked mooncake with single yolk. The lotus paste is creamy and has the right amount of sweetness to make your day. If you want something a teeny bit less sweet, there’s always the Baked Mooncake with Single Yolk and White Lotus Paste 单黄白莲蓉月饼 ($64 for 4 pcs)

Signature Baked Maple Osmanthus-Glazed Shanghai Mooncake with Single Yolk 上海单黄桂花月饼 ($64 for 4pcs)

The baked maple osmanthus-glazed mooncake is different from all of the other mooncakes in the classic mooncake selection. The crust melts in your mouth. It breaks apart and crumbles in your mouth like a pie would. If you don’t like snowskin mooncakes or mooncakes in general, go for this one; it’s cookie-like!

These lovely spheres of joy are available from 22 June through 15 September 2016 at Tea Hut (at the entrance of InterContinental Singapore at Bugis Junction) and 9 other locations across Singapore including Century Square, Junction 8, Jurong Point, NEX, Novena Square, Parkaway Parade, Takashimaya, Tiong Bahru Plaza and VivoCity.
