Have Insiders Been Selling Euronet Worldwide, Inc. (NASDAQ:EEFT) Shares This Year?

We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So we’ll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Euronet Worldwide, Inc. (NASDAQ:EEFT).

What Is Insider Buying?

It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.

We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares. For example, a Harvard University study found that ‘insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year.’

Euronet Worldwide Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Executive VP Rick Weller made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$4.8m worth of shares at a price of US$120 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of US$104. They might be selling for a variety of reasons, but it’s hard to argue this is a bullish sign. Arguably, insider selling at around current prices should give us reason to reflect on whether the stock is fully valued at the moment.

In the last twelve months insiders netted US$5.7m for 49.00k shares sold. All up, insiders sold more shares in Euronet Worldwide than they bought, over the last year. They sold for an average price of about US$117. It’s not particularly great to see insiders were selling shares around current prices. But we don’t put too much weight on the insider selling, since sellers could have personal reasons. Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. It’s great to see that Euronet Worldwide insiders own 4.2% of the company, worth about US$215m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
