Are Insiders Buying Experion Holdings Ltd. (CVE:EXP) Stock?

It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. The flip side of that is that there are more than a few examples of insiders dumping stock prior to a period of weak performance. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Experion Holdings Ltd. (CVE:EXP).

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.

We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year.

Experion Holdings Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by President Jay Garnett for CA$250k worth of shares, at about CA$0.15 per share. That means that even when the share price was higher than CA$0.10 (the recent price), an insider wanted to purchase shares. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. It is generally more encouraging if they paid above the current price, as it suggests they saw value, even at higher levels.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid CA$449k for 2.31m shares. On the other hand they divested 258500 shares, for CA$112k. In total, Experion Holdings insiders bought more than they sold over the last year. The average buy price was around CA$0.19. These transactions suggest that insiders have considered the current price attractive. The chart below shows insider transactions (by individuals) over the last year. Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. But they may have an indirect interest through a corporate structure that we haven't picked up on. We prefer to see high levels of insider ownership.

So What Do The Experion Holdings Insider Transactions Indicate?

It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchase. And an analysis of the transactions over the last year also gives us confidence. But we don't feel the same about the fact the company is making losses. While the overall levels of insider ownership are below what we'd like to see, the history of transactions imply that Experion Holdings insiders are reasonably well aligned, and optimistic for the future.
