Are Insiders Buying Americold Realty Trust (NYSE:COLD) Stock?

We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Americold Realty Trust (NYSE:COLD).

What Is Insider Buying?

It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. For example, a Columbia University study found that 'insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers'.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Americold Realty Trust

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Trustee Kelly Barrett for US$210k worth of shares, at about US$34.96 per share. That implies that an insider found the current price of US$35.21 per share to be enticing. That means they have been optimistic about the company in the past, though they may have changed their mind. We do always like to see insider buying, but it is worth noting if those purchases were made at well below today's share price, as the discount to value may have narrowed with the rising price. Happily, the Americold Realty Trust insider decided to buy shares at close to current prices. The only individual insider to buy over the last year was Kelly Barrett.
