Independent Chairman of the Board Ian Clyne Just Bought 18% More Shares In Geopacific Resources Limited (ASX:GPR)

Whilst it may not be a huge deal, we thought it was good to see that the Geopacific Resources Limited (ASX:GPR) Independent Chairman of the Board, Ian Clyne, recently bought AU$50k worth of stock, for AU$0.31 per share. While we're hesitant to get too excited about a purchase of that size, we do note it increased their holding by a solid 18%.

Geopacific Resources Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Notably, that recent purchase by Ian Clyne is the biggest insider purchase of Geopacific Resources shares that we've seen in the last year. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at around the current price of AU$0.33. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. We do always like to see insider buying, but it is worth noting if those purchases were made at well below today's share price, as the discount to value may have narrowed with the rising price. The good news for Geopacific Resources share holders is that an insider was buying at near the current price. The only individual insider to buy over the last year was Ian Clyne.

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Our data suggests Geopacific Resources insiders own 1.1% of the company, worth about AU$1.7m. We do note, however, it is possible insiders have an indirect interest through a private company or other corporate structure. I generally like to see higher levels of ownership.

So What Does This Data Suggest About Geopacific Resources Insiders?

It's certainly positive to see the recent insider purchase. We also take confidence from the longer term picture of insider transactions. However, we note that the company didn't make a profit over the last twelve months, which makes us cautious. On this analysis the only slight negative we see is the fairly low (overall) insider ownership; their transactions suggest that they are quite positive on Geopacific Resources stock. So while it's helpful to know what insiders are doing in terms of buying or selling, it's also helpful to know the risks that a particular company is facing.
