Should Incyte (NASDAQ:INCY) Be Disappointed With Their 56% Profit?

Incyte Corporation (NASDAQ:INCY) shareholders have seen the share price descend 14% over the month. But the silver lining is the stock is up over five years. In that time, it is up 56%, which isn't bad, but is below the market return of 64%.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During the last half decade, Incyte became profitable. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd expect the share price to be up. Since the company was unprofitable five years ago, but not three years ago, it's worth taking a look at the returns in the last three years, too. In fact, the Incyte stock price is 4.6% lower in the last three years. During the same period, EPS grew by 142% each year. It would appear there's a real mismatch between the increasing EPS and the share price, which has declined -1.6% a year for three years.

We like that insiders have been buying shares in the last twelve months. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. This free interactive report on Incyte's earnings, revenue and cash flow is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.

A Different Perspective

Incyte shareholders are up 7.1% for the year. But that was short of the market average. It's probably a good sign that the company has an even better long term track record, having provided shareholders with an annual TSR of 9.4% over five years. Maybe the share price is just taking a breather while the business executes on its growth strategy. Investors who like to make money usually check up on insider purchases, such as the price paid, and total amount bought. You can find out about the insider purchases of Incyte by clicking this link.
