Ina and Jeffrey Garten’s Wedding Photos Will Make You Believe in Love

Ina Garten married her husband Jeffrey on December 22, 1968, when she was 20 and he was 22.

“It was a perfect day for a wedding,” Garten tells PEOPLE exclusively in this week’s issue, on newsstands now. The ceremony took place at her parents’ house — which she describes as “a very contemporary rock cliff in the woods in Connecticut” — and it included a magical winter surprise.

“Right in the middle of the ceremony, it started to snow. It was beautiful and romantic, but by the end of the party, the poor guys parking cars had to dig everyone out!” she recalls.

It’s no surprise they’re “still having fun 48 years later,” given their philosophy on love. Though the two are apart most of the week, they cherish the time they do have together and always stay connected. “No matter where he is, I always know that there’s nothing more important than me in his life,” Garten says. “We give each other enormous freedom to do what we want to do, but we’re still the anchor.”
