Idina Menzel surprises Wicked 's new Broadway star, gives very important costume advice

The Kelly Clarkson Show doubled the toil and trouble as Idina Menzel surprised Wicked's newest Elphaba. Menzel, who originated the role in 2003, imparted her wisdom to Talia Suskauer, who makes her Broadway debut May 24 after having toured with the musical.

"Make sure you wear the black opaque tights underneath just in case you're drinking a lot of water, and someone makes you laugh, and you pee in your pants," Menzel warned. "It stops it up really good, and then you can just go right out there and fly."

As Suskauer prepares to defy gravity eight times a week at New York's Gershwin Theater, she made clear that she doesn't feel the pressure of living up to Menzel's portrayal of the Wicked Witch of the West.

"Do you feel like you have huge footsteps to fill?" Menzel asked, laughing.

"What I actually feel is the strength of all of the women who have played the part before me," Suskauer replied.

The Frozen actress promised that she would catch Suskauer during her run after having taken her son and his basketball team to see the production in April.

"People are coming to the theater, they're expecting to hear the cast album, and I'm never gonna be this incredible person right here," Suskauer said as she gestured to Menzel. "But I can be me."

The new Elphaba appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show with her longtime vocal coach, Craig Wich, whom she told about her new role in a viral, er, "popular," TikTok.

Suskauer won't be the only one decked out in green paint, as Cynthia Erivo will don the black pointy hat alongside Ariana Grande's Glinda in the upcoming two-part Wicked movie, set to premiere in 2024 and 2025.
