HURON-KINLOSS – The 2021 fire department budget included $15,000 to upgrade auto extrication equipment (“Jaws of Life”), with $20,000 for other equipment purchases.
Fire Chief Chris Cleave proposed spending the entire amount for the full set of extrication tools at a cost of $32,000.
The purchases that would be deferred include fire hose and appliances, plus medical coveralls. Once members are trained on the new equipment, Cleave stated in his report that the older surplus equipment could be sold.
Coun. Jim Hanna presented an alternative suggestion during discussion at the Sept. 8 meeting – go ahead and purchase the extrication equipment, but also go ahead with the other purchases.
Treasurer Jodi MacArthur said the fire department could be allowed to run over-budget until year’s end, or staff could look at other sources from reserves and bring back a report.
Deputy Mayor Don Murray said, “We want to see the items in the budget bought, plus the extrication equipment.”
