House of Gucci spoilers follow.

Co-screenwriter Robert Bentivegna has weighed in on recreating the famous murder of Maurizio Gucci for Ridley Scott's biopic.

In the new movie, titled House of Gucci, shots of Lady Gaga's Patrizia Reggiani submerging herself in the bath and Adam Driver's Maurizio going about his daily business intercut before two hired hitmen assassinate him.

"I thought it was a death, but it's actually two deaths," Bentivegna told Entertainment Weekly.

"When Patrizia knows that Maurizio is about to die, I think she dies a little bit inside, too. I always imagined it as an intercutting between those two moments: Maurizio being murdered and Patrizia in the bathtub, discovering what she'd done and not being able to turn back."

According to the scribe, director Scott made the "incredibly powerful" decision to soundtrack this heart-stopping build-up with tranquil instrumentals, as the soon-to-be-murdered Gucci heir sips coffee and rides his bike.

Moments after Maurizio's death, Patrizia is seen grabbing her diary before etching the Italian word 'paradiso' [paradise] inside.

This could either be read as the character celebrating her ex-husband's soul ascending to heaven or, in a darker light, Patrizia referencing her own state of peace now that he's been murdered.

In an earlier scene at the spa's mud bath, she also smears some of the clay across clairvoyant and co-conspirator Pina's (Salma Hayek) face. "That was an ad-lib," reveals Bentivegna, "It was like war paint. Genius! I'm flattered that actors improvise my script. I'm not precious about it."

House of Gucci is out now in cinemas.
