Hollyoaks' Ashley Taylor Dawson thinks the soap should 'milk' storylines more

Hollyoaks actor Ashley Taylor Dawson has teased a change he'd bring into the soap.

Sitting down for the latest episode of the podcast Soap From The Box, which premieres this Sunday (May 16), the Darren Osborne actor suggested that the makers are guilty of not "milking" the storylines enough.

"It's like a ridiculous jigsaw puzzle!" he says of splicing new plots and twists together.

"At Hollyoaks there's something like 54 actors and actresses. You've got to make sure all of those have a drive, have a story, have an interest, have a love, have an anger. Then it's all got to link up.

"One thing Hollyoaks does really well is coming up with the ideas. I sometimes think we're guilty of not milking them enough. Because it's for a younger audience, they say it's got to be fast-paced and the stories have got to keep changing and moving on," he continued.

"I always think, the art and the drama is often in what's being said. It's that fast-paced that you almost miss that. They do an incredible job to keep it coming thick and fast like they have done."

The soap star also praised the introduction of producer Lucy Allen, who's "very character-driven" in her work style.

"That's the first thing I said – is there any way we can have those scenes? I'd like to sit there with one of the lads or one of the ladies and just sit there chatting about the fly in the room," he said. "Let the writers write and the actors act. It's almost like improvisation but obviously we can't do that.

"Just playing around with the fact that if people can sit there talking absolute nonsense, and if you can then make that interesting and get your character involved in it, it's a lot more fun to play and I think it's great for the viewer as well."

Hollyoaks currently airs new episodes from Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
