Heart patient gets lottery ticket in a get-well card — and it was worth $1 million

It was a “heart-felt win” for an open-heart surgery patient who was gifted a lottery ticket inside a get-well card that was worth $1 million.

Alexander McLeish, of Attleborough, Massachusetts, underwent open-heart surgery earlier in November and received three “$5,000,000 100X Cashword” instant tickets inside the card from his friend and won big, a news release from Massachusetts State Lottery said.

When he went to scratch the “Your Letters” area of the winning ticket, the first three letters he scratched off were his initials “A, W and M.”

“As if that wasn’t enough of a positive omen, the word that appeared on the bottom row of his winning puzzle was ‘HEART,’” the recovering heart surgery patient discovered, the release said.

This isn’t the first time his same friend, whose name wasn’t mentioned, gave him a prize-winning lottery ticket.

McLeish was gifted a lottery ticket several years ago for his birthday from the friend and won $1,000.

As for McLeish’s current million-dollar win, which he claimed on Nov. 26, he chose to receive a one-time payment of $650,000 before taxes.

His friend purchased the winning ticket at Quickeez Beer, Wine and Convenience Store roughly 30 miles away from where McLeish lives in Attleborough.

The store will get a $10,000 bonus for selling the million-dollar ticket.

McClatchy News has reached out to Massachusetts State Lottery to contact McLeish further.
