If You Had Bought WestKam Gold (CVE:WKG) Stock Three Years Ago, You'd Be Sitting On A 92% Loss, Today

As every investor would know, not every swing hits the sweet spot. But really big losses can really drag down an overall portfolio. So spare a thought for the long term shareholders of WestKam Gold Corp. (CVE:WKG); the share price is down a whopping 92% in the last three years. That might cause some serious doubts about the merits of the initial decision to buy the stock, to put it mildly. And over the last year the share price fell 75%, so we doubt many shareholders are delighted. On top of that, the share price is down 50% in the last week.

We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It's a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it's worth keeping in mind there's more to life than money, anyway.

WestKam Gold didn't have any revenue in the last year, so it's fair to say it doesn't yet have a proven product (or at least not one people are paying for). This state of affairs suggests that venture capitalists won't provide funds on attractive terms. So it seems that the investors focused more on what could be, than paying attention to the current revenues (or lack thereof). It seems likely some shareholders believe that WestKam Gold will find or develop a valuable new mine before too long.

As a general rule, if a company doesn't have much revenue, and it loses money, then it is a high risk investment. There is almost always a chance they will need to raise more capital, and their progress - and share price - will dictate how dilutive that is to current holders. While some such companies do very well over the long term, others become hyped up by promoters before eventually falling back down to earth, and going bankrupt (or being recapitalized). Some WestKam Gold investors have already had a taste of the bitterness stocks like this can leave in the mouth.

Our data indicates that WestKam Gold had CA$1,050,468 more in total liabilities than it had cash, when it last reported in January 2019. That makes it extremely high risk, in our view. But with the share price diving 56% per year, over 3 years, it's probably fair to say that some shareholders no longer believe the company will succeed. You can see in the image below, how WestKam Gold's cash levels have changed over time (click to see the values).

It can be extremely risky to invest in a company that doesn't even have revenue. There's no way to know its value easily. What if insiders are ditching the stock hand over fist? It would bother me, that's for sure. It only takes a moment for you to check whether we have identified any insider sales recently.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 1.0% in the last year, WestKam Gold shareholders lost 75%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 36% over the last half decade. We realise that Buffett has said investors should 'buy when there is blood on the streets', but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality businesses. If you would like to research WestKam Gold in more detail then you might want to take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in the company.
