New grocery delivery service in Charlottetown

A Charlottetown company is set to start offering a new service: delivering groceries to your door.

The company, Kangaroo Hub, launched in October. It makes deliveries for restaurants and other companies. Now, it's launching a new branch — Kangaroo Hub Grocery.

"Seniors would be very interested in using this, and people that have very, very busy schedules and just don't want to take the time to stand fighting people in the grocery store to buy their items," said company owner Don Ramsay.

The way it works is simple. Customers use the website to place an order, and sign up for a two hour window when a driver will deliver the groceries. The company will deliver within the city of Charlottetown.

'This is a convenience service'

Ramsay said his employees will buy the groceries at stores — including Atlantic Superstore, Sobeys and Walmart.

The prices Kangaroo Hub Grocery charges for each item will be only slightly more expensive than buying the items directly from the store.

Ramsay said he has been doing research for the last few months on the average prices for a wide range of products at local stores. He's basing the prices for Kangaroo Hub Grocery off of that — with a little wiggle room in case prices fluctuate.

"We're not going to say that we have the lowest prices around, simply because we have to have a margin of error just in case the store changes their prices … This is a convenience service," said Ramsay.

There's also a $12.50 flat rate delivery charge on all orders.

He has about 15 drivers whom he employs for Kangaroo Hub's other delivery services. He said they'll be doing the grocery deliveries to start, but he expects to hire more people.

Lots of interest

Ramsay said he's had a lot of interest in the new service. He said he's heard from about 50 people this week alone. He hasn't had any orders yet, but he said the site and his drivers are ready.

"People are using technology more," said Ramsay. "But also there seems to be an impression of people are much busier than they used to be, and they're looking for things that will help them, you know, save time. Because time is money."

At the moment, the only way to place an order is through the website, but Ramsay said he wants to explore other options — like ordering by phone — for people who might not have internet access.
