Grimes just got a new back tattoo that resembles 'alien scars' (and it's huge)

Singer Grimes has always been one to dance to the beat of her own drum (and as far as we can tell, has always had an obsession with aliens) – so while her new tattoo might not be to everybody's taste, it's definitely the perfect fit for her.

The unique new artwork covers the whole of Grimes' back and has been drawn using white ink, which after the initial healing period can resemble scarring, especially on lighter skin tones. As for the design of the piece itself, it features an intricate pattern of what looks like nail scratches and swirls.

Posting about the tattoo on social media, the co-artist behind it, Nusi Quero, wrote: "Last night we co-designed a full back tattoo (w my brilliant friend Tweakz) for @Grimezsz. It was half-hand drawn then half-procedurally generated, then they banged out the whole thing in one go. Such a beautiful experience and talisman for her world. Electric energy is abuzz."

Quero continued on to share a behind-the-scenes look at the digital design process, writing alongside the footage, "The procedural point advection simulation over Tweakz design. I loved the fluid process on this like the whole thing happened in like 3-4 hours. Amazing to participate in and witness."

Grimes also posted about the tattoo on her Instagram account and said that once the redness subsided, the tattoo would look more like scarring. She also shared an image of her freshly-tatted back and added that she'd get a better picture after having a decent night's sleep and when the pain stopped. Which is completely fair tbh.

"Full back in white ink by @tweakt w sum help from the alien computer brain of @nusi_quero," she said. "Don’t have a good pic cuz it hurts too much and I need to sleep haha, and it’ll be red for a few wks , but gna be beautiful alien scars. Hope everyone’s having a good day 😴"

In other Grimes-related news, the singer welcomed her first child, named X Æ A-Xii, with Tesla founder, Elon Musk, last year, which may also explain why she's feeling sleepy of late (I heard a rumour that babies are a lot of hard work?). She also recently successfully petitioned Spotify to recognise 'ethereal' as a genre of music.

We're excited to see the tattoo when it's fully healed!
