Greggs reaches deal over sausage roll ban just days before court trial was due to begin

Greggs made headlines last month when it was revealed the bakery chain was gearing up to go to court over a ban on its sausage rolls. Naturally, panic ensued.

It all started when Westminster Council ruled that Greggs would not be permitted to sell hot food late at night from its flagship Leicester Square store. Currently the branch is open 7am to 11pm most days (bar Sunday, when it doesn't open until 8am), but it had hoped to keep its doors open for longer.

The Metropolitan Police, as well as some local councillors and residents, had raised concerns that extended opening hours may spark a wave of "crime and disorder" from hungry Greggs fans, but the bakery chain decided to fight back and this week the trial was called off after an agreement was reached.

"We’ve now got an agreement with Westminster – we’ve reached a compromise," Roisin Currie, CEO at Greggs, told the Evening Standard.

"We can still sell all of our sandwiches, all of our sweet products [late at night] but we’ve been working with the council on what we can sell later in the evening. It’s very positive and we’ve worked well together," she continued, confirming that hot sausage rolls will be on the menu for late night Greggs go-ers.

"Westminster has come to an agreement with Greggs that works for everyone," added deputy council leader Aicha Less. "The licence is also subject to significant conditions which includes the installation of CCTV at the premises, the use of door supervisors and the clearing of litter outside the premises."

Less continued: "We are pleased to continue to support local businesses and look forward to working with the company going forward."

And, relax...
