Google search 2.0: Inside Alphabet's new mobile engine

Stocks (^DJI, ^GSPC, ^IXIC) are rallying midday after several earnings beats, with health care (XLV) leading the way and utilities (XLU) in the rear, but still in the green. Peter Costa, president of Empire Executions, joins us live from the New York Stock Exchange.

To discuss the other big stories of the day, Alexis Christoforous is joined by Yahoo Tech Founder, David Pogue and Yahoo Finance’s Dan Roberts.

Google creating brand new mobile search engine

Google is shaking up search—again. We’re all familiar with the classic desktop search interface. Then there’s also Google’s mobile search app. And they’re both powered by the same engine—but not for long. Google is quietly building a new search engine exclusively tailored to mobile, which will eventually become its primary index.

Apple scaling back plans to build a self-driving car: Bloomberg

Apple’s long-rumored plan to build an electric, self-driving car appears to have hit a roadblock. Bloomberg this week reports that the iPhone maker run by Tim Cook has re-assigned or let go hundreds of members of its car team. Apple is now reportedly focused on developing a driverless car system it could sell to existing carmakers. Bloomberg says the plan is to have something ready for Apple executives to look at by 2017. Then the company could decide to push on—or pull the plug.

CNBC’s Jim Cramer cited a recent conversation with Salesforce CEO Mark Benioff in making that case. And Bloomberg has reported that Disney was also concerned about Twitter’s troll problem.
