Good start for Archbishop McCarthy girls’ soccer. Plus basketball and more soccer results

The Archbishop McCarthy girls’ soccer team is off to a good start this season at 4-2, including a 2-0 victory over defending state champion Cardinal Gibbons.

The Mavericks also beat Coral Springs Charter, Gulliver Prep and Western. They lost to Doral Academy and Lourdes.

Archbishop McCarthy girls’ soccer is coached by Mike Sica. This is his 16th season with the program (12 as head coach, four as assistant coach). During that time the Mavericks won four district championships, four regional titles and one state championship.

Archbishop McCarthy 2, Cardinal Gibbons 0: Sophia Goetz scored both goals, and Michaela Carter and Lea Valdez had 1 assist each. Other strong performances were by Aubrey Havens, Melissa Noriega, and Francesca Durand. Gkp Paloma Pena recorded the shutout.

Archbishop McCarthy 2, Coral Springs Charter 0: Kiana Rhee-Osorio and Bella Rocco scored 1 goal each. Melanie Sanchez and Sophia Goetz had assists. Other top performers were Gigi Galdorise, Sarah Miret, Jade Daniels, and Trixie Lyons. Gkps Isabella Quintero and Paloma Pena combined for the shutout.

GIRLS: Gulliver Prep 5, True North 0: Emma van den Dijssel recorded her first two goals of the season. She was assisted by Christine Lezama, who also added a goal. Catalina Garcia continued to be a playmaker with two assists and one goal. Ariana Hernando added her first goal of the season. Returning from injury, goalkeeper Ana Levy-Armesto had four saves en route to her first shutout of the season.

GIRLS: Gulliver Prep 1, Miami Country Day 0: Olaia Rackauskas scored her first goal of her senior year (the winner) off an assist from Catalina Garcia.

GIRLS: LaSalle 2, St. Brendan 1: Rebecca Baldelomar 1 goal, 1 assist; Hanah Gonzalez 1 goal; Deanna Prieto 1 assist. LaS (6-1).

Basketball

The Columbus boys’ basketball team handed Palmetto its first loss of the season 72-58.

Explorers aophomore Malik Abdullahi delivered a double double with 18 rebounds and 11 points, and 14-year-old freshmen standouts Cayden and Cameron Boozer scored 20 apiece to lead the charge.

A tenacious defense proved to be the X-factor in the Explorers earning this tough road win. Palmetto kept it a game with 6-foot-7 senior Jimel Lane scoring 28 points and grabbing 17 boards. Sophomore point guard Braylon Burbridge contributed 13 points and proivded solid all-around play.

Columbus increased a 5-point halftime lead to 13 by the end of the third. The Panthers cut it to nine with four minutes to play, but Columbus prevailed.
