Golden State Warriors become the first pro sports team to release an NFT

For the Golden State Warriors, the decision to get into the NFT (non-fungible token) game was as easy as a Steph Curry jumper. Bidding opens today for The Golden State Warriors Legacy NFT Collection.

The six-time NBA champs are the first professional sports team to release an NFT, Brandon Schneider, president and COO of the franchise, told Yahoo Finance.

“NFTs have been around now for years but have really started to take off in the last six to eight months. We are constantly thinking about new ways to engage our fans, and being where we are in the Bay Area from a technology standpoint as the world continues to digitize, we created a task force internally and started talking about how we [could] use this new cool technology," he said.

  • 1956 NBA Championship (limited to 25 editions)

  • 1975 NBA Championship ( limited to 25 editions)

  • 2015 NBA Championship (limited to 50 editions)

  • 2017 NBA Championship (limited to 50 editions)

  • 2018 NBA Championship (limited to 50 editions)

  • 1-of-1 Golden State Warriors Six-Time NBA Champion Ring

As part of the collection, the team will also release the collection Golden State Warriors Commemorative Ticket Stub NFTs. Each ticket stub was hand-illustrated and digitally created by the renowned artist Black Madre and will be limited to 10 editions each.

A portion of all proceeds from the collection will go towards the Warriors Community Foundation. The foundation focuses on educational equity in the Bay Area.

“Our foundation has granted over $22 million in impact since its inception in 2012. Our annual number continues to grow as we diversify our fundraising opportunities,” said Schneider. "There’s as much of a need or more than ever given the current time. So it was really, really important to us that this benefit is in our foundation.”

The bidding on the main collection starts on April 27 at 6 AM PT/ 9 am ET and will end on Saturday, May 1 at 8 pm PT/11 pm ET. The 1-of-1 auctions will also start on April 27 at 6 AM PT/ 9 am ET end on Sunday, May 2 at 8 pm PT/11 pm ET at https://gswnft.com. All editions will be sold to the highest bidder.
