From Digital Spy

Godzilla has been around for a long, long time. Since 1954 to be precise. However, in 2014 Godzilla got the full-blown Hollywood treatment, with a bit of Marvel thrown in to boot and thus the MonsterVerse was born.

It began with 2014's Godzilla, then branching out to feature another giant city-stomping creature with Kong: Skull Island (2017). It was in this movie that Godzilla featured in a post-credits scene, teasing Godzilla: King of the Monsters. (Now you see the MCU comparison, yes?).

It's 2021, however, that will be the biggest year for our favourite Kaiju. Godzilla vs Kong is coming, and here is everything we know so far.

Godzilla vs Kong release date: When is Godzilla vs Kong out?

It has been a long journey for these two monsters. Initially, the film was set to debut in May 2020, before being brought forward to March 2020. But even before the entire landscape of film and, well, the world was disrupted, the release date was in a precarious spot.

It was moved to November 20, 2020, and then with the inevitable delays, Godzilla vs Kong was pushed back again.

Then, with the surprising news that Warner Bros would release all of their 2021 slate simultaneously in select cinemas and on HBO Max, the release date was scheduled for May 21, 2021. Then, Deadline reported the officialy (and hopefully final) release date for Godzilla vs Kong is Friday, March 26.

Godzilla vs Kong plot: What is Godzilla vs Kong about?

King Kong and Godzilla duke it out in an epic showdown, duh. That said, director Adam Wingard revealed the film will be "a massive monster brawl movie… there's lots of monsters going crazy on each other."

So far in the MonsterVerse we’ve seen the primate powerhouse against the skull crawlers in Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla against King Ghidorah, Rodan and Mothra in King of the Monsters, the events of which follow on from the first film in the franchise, 2014’s Godzilla.

As a direct sequel to the films, Godzilla vs Kong looks set to answer the age-old cinematic question of who would win in a fight. "I do want there to be a winner," Wingard told Entertainment Weekly.

"The original film was very fun, but you feel a little let down that the movie doesn’t take a definitive stance. People are still debating now who won in that original movie, you know.

"So, I do want people to walk away from this film feeling like, 'Okay, there is a winner'." That said, if the synopsis is anything to go by, it could well be that the titular two aren’t the real villains after all.

"As Monarch embarks on a perilous mission into uncharted terrain and unearths clues to the Titans’ origins, a human conspiracy threatens to wipe the creatures, both good and bad, from the face of the earth forever," the official synopsis teased.

Looks like humans could turn out to be the biggest bads in this iteration of the MonsterVerse.

While Wingard wants to make us all cry, Legendary CEO Joshua Grode is determined to keep us all entertained in the years to come, with plenty of MonsterVerse follow-up films after Godzilla vs Kong. “I hope [we make] a lot [of additional Godzilla movies],” he said. “I hope the gas tank is full.”

Godzilla vs Kong cast: Who's returning to Godzilla vs Kong, and what new characters will we?

Not content with having Godzilla and Kong together in one place, the MonsterVerse bosses are bringing in the big guns with the casting too.

First up, Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown will reprise her King of the Monsters role as Madison Russell, a Monarch scientist’s daughter who is somehow linked to the Titans.

Meanwhile, her dad Mark Russell will once again be portrayed by Kyle Chandler, and Zhang Ziyi has confirmed to return as the mysterious Dr Chen, a character who appears to be working for Monarch.

A few new faces have joined the ranks too, including Big Little Lies star Alexander Skarsgård, Deadpool’s Julian Dennison, The Nuns’ Demián Bichir and Brian Tyree Henry of Atlanta fame.

But the list doesn’t end there, as the star-studded ensemble grew with the addition of Eiza González (Baby Driver), Lance Reddick (John Wick), Rebecca Hall (The Prestige) Shun Oguri (Crows Zero), and Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist).

With all of the additions, there are a couple of actors who might not be making a comeback for the almighty monster mash-up. This includes Charles Dance and O'Shea Jackson Jr who, despite surviving the carnage of King of the Monsters, revealed to Digital Spy that they won't be seen in Godzilla vs Kong.
