GM's Electric Vehicles Can Join Tesla's Supercharger Network for $225
Good news, EV owners: The official General Motors charging adapter that will allow its electric vehicles to access the Tesla Supercharger network is, as of September 18, officially available to purchase.
This new GM NACS adapter will cost $225, and it will be available to owners of its EVs via GM vehicle brand mobile apps. Once one has the adapter in hand, you’ll then use the same mobile app to locate Tesla Superchargers, initiate a charge and pay for charging. GM says you’ll be able to check station status from the app, as well, ensuring you don’t show up to a full station and have to spend your time twiddling your thumbs.
These days, virtually every major auto manufacturer is transitioning from the Combined Charging System (CCS) standard to the North American Charging Standard (NACS) pioneered by Tesla, in an effort to use the brand's widespread Supercharger network of fast chargers. In the meantime, while buyers wait for the NACS port to be installed natively in new cars — as most OEMs have promised to begin doing in 2025 — adapters like this one will continue to be introduced for CCS-port vehicles.
As of today, this move opens up 17,800 Tesla Supercharger stations in North America for owners of GM EVs. Other manufacturers like Ford and Rivian are already offering NACS adapters to customers; unlike GM, though, neither Ford nor Rivian have made their EV owners pay for the adapters, although Ford has said buyers who order one after September 30 will have to pay a $230 fee.
As for the part itself, GM says it’s using “multiple suppliers” to produce approved NACS adapters. Each one has been developed to function with GM EVs across the board, regardless of the supplier.
The adapter is available for GM owners in the U.S. to order Wednesday, and will go on sale to Canadian customers later in 2024.
