GM unveils Silverado EV pickup at CES

General Motors' (GM) electric pickup is finally here after first being previewed back in March 2020.

During her keynote speech at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), GM CEO Mary Barra took the wraps off the automaker's all-new Chevrolet Silverado EV pickup, one that will face off against Ford's (F) F-150 Lightning, Rivian (RIVN) R1T, and, eventually, the Tesla (TSLA) Cybertruck.

The fully-electric trucks were designed from the ground-up to be powered by GM's Ultium battery platform, with dual motors front and rear for its all-wheel drive system and independent suspension all around. Other notable features include:

  • Estimated 400-mile range on a full charge for both the launch Work Truck and RST models

  • Up to 664 horsepower and 780 lb-ft of torque on the RST (the WT will launch with 510 hp and 615 lb-ft of torque)

  • Up to 10.2kW of offboard power for use at a worksite, campsite, or powering a home

  • Up to 10,000 pounds of max towing with up to 1,300 pounds of payload on the RST (WT will offer 8,000 pounds of towing and 1,200 pounds of payload)

The 2024 Silverado EV will launch in 2023 with two models, with a loaded RST First Edition, and a fleet-oriented WT (Work Truck) model.

The RST First Edition will come with four-wheel steering and automatic adaptive air suspension, and GM's multi-flex tailgate.

Like Rivian R1T's gear tunnel and the F-150 Lightning's Mega Power Frunk, the new Silverado EV has its own innovation: the Multi-Flex Midgate.

The Multi-Flex Midgate is essentially the back of the cab that connects to the truck's bed. The midgate can fold down into the cab to extend the pickup bed, which can create nine feet of storage between the cab and the tailgate, or nearly 11 feet if the tailgate is left open, thought it does leave the cab exposed to the elements.

GM has been unclear in terms of pricing, however. The Silverado EV will debut in the spring of 2023 with the WT model equipped with its largest battery (400 miles estimated), but no pricing was given. In the fall of 2023, the fully-loaded RST First Edition model will launch with that same 400-mile range, but with a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $105,000.

After production ramps up, according to GM, Chevrolet will offer a version of the WT with a starting MSRP of $39,900 (specs of this model weren't given), and various other trims with prices around "$50,000, $60,000, $70,000, $80,000 and more," to offer buyers flexibility and choice.

Prospective buyers can reserve a Silverado EV now on the Chevrolet website.
