Feds send mobile health units to Ontario to address hospital capacity crunch
TORONTO — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Ottawa is sending two mobile health units to the Greater Toronto Area to help address the strain COVID-19 is placing on hospitals. The units will bring an additional 200 hospital beds to the area, to help free up space for people who need intensive care, and will provide medical equipment and supplies. Ontario's hospitals have been struggling with capacity challenges for weeks because of surging COVID-19 cases, especially in hot spots. On Monday, the province said a new hospital set to open in Vaughan, Ont., will be used to help relieve the capacity crunch. Premier Doug Ford said some patients from overcrowded Greater Toronto Area hospitals would be transferred to Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital when it opens on Feb. 7. Ontario is reporting 2,662 new cases of COVID-19 today and 87 more deaths related to the virus. Health Minister Christine Elliott said there are 779 new cases in Toronto, 542 in Peel Region, and 228 in York Region. She said there are also 128 more cases in Waterloo Region and 118 in Windsor-Essex County. More than 71,000 tests have been completed in Ontario since the last daily update. The province is also reporting that 11,168 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine were administered since its last daily update. A total of 264,985 vaccine doses have been administered in Ontario so far. U.S. Capitol Police on Friday were investigating an incident in which a Republican lawmaker was found carrying a concealed gun while trying to enter the floor of the House of Representatives, a Capitol official said. Republican Representative Andy Harris, a staunch gun-rights advocate, set off a magnetometer going through security on his way to the House floor late on Thursday and was found to be carrying a firearm, according to a congressional press pool report. Brexit leader to head Mississippi public policy centre
JACKSON, Miss. — A leader of the Brexit movement and newly appointed government trade adviser in the United Kingdom is now the head of a conservative think-tank in the American South. Douglas Carswell, 49, started working this month as the new CEO and president of Mississippi Center for Public Policy. Carswell, a libertarian and former member of Britain’s governing Conservative Party, was a member of Parliament for 12 years and a co-founder of Vote Leave, the campaign that pushed the Brexit referendum in 2016. Carswell said his home country was his primary focus as the U.K. negotiated terms of its recently finalized split from the European Union. However, he said he has had a growing interest in working in the U.S. “I think the fight for freedom in America is the most important battle for freedom in the world, because America is the exceptional country in the world,” Carswell told The Associated Press. Former Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, a Republican who left office a year ago, has developed a work relationship with Brexit leader Nigel Farage, and Bryant attended a 2019 event for the lobbying group World4Brexit. Carswell said he has never met Bryant. Carswell clashed with more populist Farage after being the first of only two U.K. Independence Party candidates ever elected to Parliament. Farage ran unsuccessfully more than half a dozen times. Carswell's 2014 election victory gave political momentum to the party and the Brexit cause. He left the U.K. Independence Party in 2017, later stepping down from Parliament. After Britain’s 2016 vote to leave the European Union, many of the figures who led the campaign have moved on to new ventures. Farage became a radio talk-show host and Donald Trump’s main British supporter, once even attending and speaking at a 2016 Trump campaign event in Mississippi. Others have been appointed to the House of Lords by Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government. It’s common for former British lawmakers of all political stripes to seek think-tank or academic posts in the U.S. — a career move that can often bring prestige back home. In an email introducing his new position in Mississippi, Carswell said he believes freedom in the U.S. is “under attack” from a “radical New Left.” “If liberty is extinguished, the United States will become just another over-regulated, over-taxed, debt-ridden country, presided over by remote officials,” he said. “That would be a catastrophe for the whole world.” Carswell said he thinks school choice can give low-income Mississippi families more opportunities. He said he will push policies to make the state more competitive in attracting new businesses and allowing existing ones to grow. “Businesses that are traditionally located in hubs like New York, or Chicago or California, quite a few of those businesses are moving away from high tax and regulation regimes to Texas, Florida or Tennessee,” he said. “Why not Mississippi?” The Mississippi Center for Public Policy lobbies for lower taxes, fewer government regulations and free-market approaches to health care. Carswell said he admires that people’s freedoms in the U.S. are defined in federal and state constitutions. “In America, if your local mayor wakes up one morning and decides to take away your fundamental freedoms, you can take the politicians to court under the Constitution, you can enforce your rights as an individual,” he said. It allows “ordinary folk to live their lives free from the arbitrary whim of government,” Carswell said. “It’s only when you don’t have that that you realize quite how precious it is,” he said. “It really is the secret of American success.” Carswell plans to live in Jackson with his family but is not leaving U.K. politics. In November, he was appointed to a three-year term as a nonexecutive director of Britain’s Department for International Trade. Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week a virtual success
GREY BRUCE – It was a unique challenge for Grey Bruce Farmers Week, Jan. 5-12 – two featured speakers in different time zones (one in the United Kingdom and the other in New Zealand) speaking simultaneously in a third time zone in Owen Sound, and being broadcast to four different time zones. Lorie Smith and the GBFW organizing team met the challenge, and more with this year’s virtual event. Thanks to the expertise of CTRE Productions and a lot of advance planning, the presentation entitled Using Genomic Markers in an Ovine Breeding Strategy, by Robert Hodgkins, owner, Kaipoi, U.K., and Johanna Scott, owner, Targeted Breeding, New Zealand, on Sheep Day, Jan. 9, went off without a hitch. The same was true of the other presentations and trade show at this year’s event. Unlike past years, when the live conference and trade show has been held in Elmwood, this year’s event was virtual. Said event organizer Smith, the decision made last summer to hold a fully virtual event was not an easy one. While GBFW has utilized livestreaming technology in recent years, doing the entire event including the trade show component was a tremendous leap of faith – not just by her and her team, but the producers and sponsors. And it worked. She said even people who were none too familiar with the technology were willing to give it a try. “Zoom broke through that ceiling for us,” she said. Before the pandemic, no one would have dreamed of having a virtual conference and trade show, but they’ve been talking to their grandchildren on Zoom. And the organizing team did what they could to make sure the event would be a success. New this year was the three-day pass. Smith said a lot of people took advantage of that. And the content was excellent. The virtual format made it possible to bring speakers from quite a distance, with no need for expensive air travel. “We delivered as much content or more,” she said. That content was delivered to a much wider, and, by all indications, very appreciative audience. People participated from right across Canada and some from the United States. “I told the CTRE Productions people to take the best parts of the in-person conference and include it,” Smith said. There was an information desk with a real person on the screen to answer technical questions, for example. People weren’t able to enjoy the beef dinners and pies, but there were ample opportunities for networking and chatting, and for asking questions to speakers. Smith said the local area has always known what an excellent conference and trade show GBFW is. It’s been described as a “hidden jewel” of an event. It’s no longer hidden. Going virtual meant more people learned about it and enjoyed it. “I hope we increased our profile,” Smith said. It wasn’t something that was left to chance. The organizing team went out of their way to get sponsors from outside the area, and they helped to promote the event right across Canada. Smith noted a Twitter comment put GBFW right up there with some of the country’s top agricultural conferences and trade shows. Although the final numbers aren’t in, Smith said indications are that some days there were a lot of people from outside Grey-Bruce attending – for example, on Sheep Day and Goat Day. Preliminary numbers indicate about 620 households attended, and many of those households had more than one person. By comparison, attendance is usually around 700 people. “Attendance was comparable or stronger,” Smith said. Although the format was different, the 55th annual GBFW had the same winning combination of speakers that attendees want to listen to and chat with, other producers to network with, trade booths with plenty of information, and much more. The reason, said Smith, is GBFW is, and always has been led and driven by farmers. In addition to herself, Nicole Heber and Patricia Ellingwood of Grey Ag Services, there’s a committee of people in the business of agriculture. Many of the presenters were suggested by farmers, for example, Crops Day presenter, Dr. Lee Briese, agronomist, from North Dakota, who spoke on Soil and Crop Management: The Details Matter (and yo-yos – those who attended will understand). It means the content is relevant and useful. “We have a history of having an exceptionally well-organized conference,” said Smith. “The was no way we weren’t going to do that (with the virtual conference).” It meant throwing everything she knew about organizing an in-person conference out the window and being ready to meet a lot of new challenges, but Smith said going virtual for 2021 was the right decision. She’s glad the decision was made early, leaving enough time to organize it properly. The organizers are facing another difficult decision about what to do about 2022. In some ways, it will be more difficult, Smith said. No one knows what’s going to happen with the pandemic, if enough people will be vaccinated in time to make an in-person conference possible. And now that the benefits of a virtual conference have been seen, the decision might be made to stay with that format. Being able to access presenters who don’t have to travel to participate is only one advantage. If organizers decide to go back to Elmwood, there will be changes, as GBFW metamorphosizes into something new. One thing is certain – GBFW22 will be excellent as always, with great speakers, ample networking opportunities, and well-attended – the best agricultural conference and trade show around. After 4-0 weekend, can Pro Picks get Super Bowl teams right?
Not to brag — well, yes, to BRAG — Pro Picks was perfect straight up last weekend, selecting all four winners in the NFL's divisional round. The problem with conference championship weekend is simple: We are torn. Any of the four not only can get to the Super Bowl, but win it. Some might want to evaluate the remaining teams by quarterback pedigree, from Tom Brady to Aaron Rodgers to Patrick Mahomes to Josh Allen. Others will examine the coaches: Andy Reid, Sean McDermott, Bruce Arians and Matt LaFleur. Still others pore through stats. And then there's the old Ouija board. We're a bit more scientific. But only a bit. TAMPA BAY (plus 3 1/2) at GREEN BAY Such a delicious menu. Starting with Brady and Rodgers, naturally. Rodgers and Brady have never faced off in the post-season. Super Bowls for much of the last two decades have been about Brady. He proved his greatness in taking New England to nine of them, winning six. He's recertifying that in his first season with the Buccaneers (13-5). As a reminder, Brady holds post-season records for starts (43), victories (32), completions (1,065), passing yards (11,968), passing touchdowns (77). Only Peyton Manning, Kurt Warner and Craig Morton led two separate franchises into the Super Bowl. This is the best array of offensive talent with Brady since he had Randy Moss in the record-setting 2007 season. And while Tampa Bay's defence isn't overpowering, it's the most solid of the four units still playing, particularly at linebacker. Rodgers is in the midst of perhaps his best season, and he has already won two NFL MVP awards as well as the 2010 league title. His work with favourite receiver and fellow All-Pro Davante Adams has been exemplary, catapulting Green Bay to a second straight 13-3 mark. “A lot of people didn’t think we’d be back here after last season,” Rodgers said. “We got a lot of interesting comments last year about us being the worst 13-3 team that people had seen. Not the same type of comments this year.” Nope. The Packers are steady enough on defence, though they can be vulnerable against the run. They play such precise football, yet with imagination, a difficult blend. It's going to be cold but probably not frigid at Lambeau Field, not that Brady and Rob Gronkowski will be uncomfortable. And the Bucs have won a franchise-record seven consecutive road games, including playoff wins at Washington and New Orleans. Will they head back to Tampa to appear in a Super Bowl at their home stadium, an NFL first? They could, but ... PACKERS 30, BUCCANEERS 27 And in the AFC: BUFFALO (plus 3 1/2) at KANSAS CITY As the reigning champions seek to become the first to repeat since Brady and the Patriots for the 2003 and 2004 seasons, they have to be at least a bit concerned that Mahomes left last week's victory with a concussion. The Chiefs aren't going to advance with Chad Henne at the helm. Of course, Mahomes could be fine and as magical as usual. He has all the targets he needs in unanimous All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce, another All-Pro in WR Tyreek Hill, and company. Kansas City's defence, led by yet another All-Pro in safety Tyrann Mathieu, gets overlooked for how improved it is. The Chiefs are at home, will have some 17,000 very loud fans on hand, and carry the confidence and swagger from what they achieved last season. And here comes Buffalo, which has been the AFC's best team the last two months. There is a solid balance between offence and defence on a roster that has matured impressively. The Allen to league receptions leader Stefon Diggs connection is as good as Rodgers to Adams. Allen is more of a threat to run for big plays than Mahomes — though not by much if Mahomes is healthy — and also has a deep receiving corps. Where Buffalo must show its skill most is in pass coverage. Cornerback Tre'Davious White is superb, and the rest of the relatively unnoticed secondary is very capable. Grey-Bruce’s top doctor updates county council on COVID-19 situation
BRUCE COUNTY – Dr. Ian Arra, Grey Bruce medical officer of health, addressed Bruce County council on Jan. 14 with an update on the COVID-19 situation including vaccinations. Arra said the most recent projections locally indicate the surge in cases over the holidays is over, and numbers are heading back to where they were, “with four to six or seven” cases per day reported. The surge had been expected, due to holiday gatherings. The situation across the province is completely different, Arra said. It shows a gradual but steady increase that does not corelate to the holidays or current lockdown, and is presently about 3,000 per day. “Fifty per cent of hospital ICUs are at capacity,” he said, adding that this is expected to continue for four to six weeks. As for the vaccine, “Today (Jan. 14) we received 200 doses.” Another 800 doses are expected to arrive the last week of January. Both are going to the long-term care sector, said Arra. That includes residents, staff and essential caregivers. The priority in the province, he said, has been “hot spots” – which Grey-Bruce definitely is not. County Coun. Anne Eadie, mayor of Kincardine, asked if it is true the general public probably will not be vaccinated until April or May. Arra confirmed it, stating the province plans to vaccinate in three phases, with the first phase, for the most vulnerable, completed by March, the second phase for essential workers following that, and the third phase being everyone else. “It’s estimated phases two and three will not be completed,” he said, and will end when the pandemic ends, when herd immunity is achieved. County Coun. Robert Buckle, mayor of South Bruce, asked if the vaccination will provide lifetime immunity. Arra answered that no one knows the answer to that one yet. At present, it seems likely the vaccine will be “somewhere between the flu and measles,” and will last between one and three years, rather like pertussis. County Coun. Luke Charbonneau asked when the vaccine “will be in arms” and why the stay-at-home order was needed in Grey-Bruce. The answer for the first part was easy – immediately, or as soon as is practical. The second part was more complicated. Strict lockdowns have proved effective in other jurisdictions, such as Australia and France. While the numbers in Grey-Bruce remain relatively low compared to the rest of the province, meaning a lockdown wouldn’t have been needed here “if we were an island.” However, the fact is we are not an island. Arra said others would have come to our area, bringing COVID-19 with them. Before the lockdown, hockey teams from outside the area were beginning to rent ice time here. Arra responded to a question from Warden Janice Jackson, mayor of South Bruce Peninsula, by saying it’s the Pfizer vaccine (the one that must be stored at extremely cold temperatures) that’s coming to Grey-Bruce, and all of it will be used as soon as possible, since more is coming by the time the second dose needs to be administered. , Local Journalism Initiative Reporter, The Walkerton Herald Times
