Dutch police clash with anti-lockdown protesters in 2 cities
THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Rioters set fires in the centre of the southern Dutch city of Eindhoven and pelted police with rocks Sunday at a banned demonstration against coronavirus lockdown measures, while officers responded with tear gas and water cannons, arresting at least 55 people. Police in the capital of Amsterdam also used a water cannon to disperse an outlawed anti-lockdown demonstration on a major square ringed by museums. Video showed police spraying people grouped against a wall of the Van Gogh Museum. It was the worst violence to hit the Netherlands since the pandemic began and the second straight Sunday that police clashed with protesters in Amsterdam. The country has been in a tough lockdown since mid-December that is due to continue at least until Feb. 9. The government beefed up the lockdown with a 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. curfew that went into force on Saturday. Justice Minister Ferd Grapperhaus condemned the violence. “This has nothing to do with demonstrating against corona measures,” Grapperhaus said in a statement. “This is simply criminal behaviour; people who deliberately target police, riot police, journalists and other aid workers.” In Eindhoven, 125 kilometres (78 miles) south of Amsterdam, a central square near the main railway station was littered with rocks, bicycles and shattered glass. The crowd of hundreds of demonstrators also was believed to include supporters of the anti-immigrant group PEGIDA, which had sought to demonstrate in the city. Eindhoven police said they made at least 55 arrests and warned people to stay away from the city centre amid the clashes. Trains to and from the station were halted and local media reported plundering at the station. A woman not involved in the protests was hospitalized after being injured by a police horse, police said. Police said more than 100 people were arrested in Amsterdam. Dutch media reported unrest in other Dutch towns Sunday night caused by people protesting against the curfew. The violence came a day after anti-curfew rioters torched a coronavirus testing facility in the Dutch fishing village of Urk. Video from Urk, 80 kilometres (50 miles) northeast of Amsterdam, showed youths breaking into the coronavirus testing facility near the village’s harbour before it was set ablaze Saturday night. The lockdown was imposed by the Dutch government to rein in the spread of the more transmissible variant of the coronavirus. Police said they fined more than 3,600 people nationwide for breaching the curfew that ran from 9 p.m. Saturday until 4:30 a.m. Sunday and arrested 25 people for breaching the curfew or for violence. The police and municipal officials issued a statement Sunday expressing their anger at rioting, “from throwing fireworks and stones to destroying police cars and with the torching of the test location as a deep point.” “This is not only unacceptable, but also a slap in the face, especially for the local health authority staff who do all they can at the test centre to help people from Urk,” the local authorities said, adding that the curfew would be strictly enforced for the rest of the week. Too soon to know if Canada's COVID-19 case decline will continue, Tam says
MONTREAL — Canada's chief public health officer says it's still too soon to know whether the recent downward trend in new COVID-19 cases will continue. Dr. Theresa Tam says there's been an improvement in the COVID-19 numbers in B.C., Alberta, Ontario and Quebec but the disease is regaining steam elsewhere. She says it appears local health measures may be starting to pay off, but it's not clear whether they're strong and broad enough to continue to sustain progress. CHICAGO — Pius Suter scored his first three NHL goals, Kevin Lankinen made 25 saves and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Detroit Red Wings 6-2 on Sunday for their second straight win. Connor Murphy and Mattias Janmark each had a goal and an assist as Chicago swept its two-game set with Detroit after beginning the season with four straight losses in Florida. Phillipp Kurashev also scored, and Patrick Kane had two assists. Lankinen was solid once again after he made 30 stops while earning his first career win in Friday night's 4-1 victory against the Red Wings. He was tested on a Dylan Larkin drive early in the second period, but he got over to make the stop at the right post. Tyler Bertuzzi scored twice for Detroit, and Jonathan Bernier made 29 saves. The Red Wings lost for the third time in their past four games. Chicago got off to a fast start behind the 24-year-old Suter, a Swiss forward who agreed to a one-year contract in July. He sent a rebound into a wide-open net 4:42 into the first period, and then added a power-play goal off a nice pass by Janmark. Chicago went 1 for 2 with the man advantage to move to 8 for 19 on the year. It has scored at least one power-play goal in its first six games for the first time since it opened the 1990-91 season with an 11-game run. Detroit got one back when Bertuzzi redirected a Larkin shot past Lankinen during a 5-on-3 power play 41 seconds into the second. But Murphy responded for Chicago, making it 3-1 when he sent a wrist shot through traffic with 2:42 left in the period. After Bertuzzi's power-play goal trimmed Chicago's lead to 4-2 in the third, Suter sent a wide-open shot from the left circle under Bernier’s glove with 7:32 left. Military to support vaccination efforts in northern Ontario Indigenous communities
TORONTO — The Canadian military is set to help with COVID-19 vaccine distribution in northern Ontario, as officials investigate the death of a teenager who had the virus and worked at a long-term care home in the province's southwest. Federal Public Safety Minister Bill Blair tweeted Sunday that the Canadian Armed Forces will support vaccine efforts in 32 communities of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation. The move came after a request from the province for assistance in getting vaccine to First Nations communities, he wrote. "ur government will always be there to support the fight against #COVID19," he wrote on Twitter. The Nishnawbe Aski Nation, whose territory comprises 49 remote communities in northwestern Ontario, did not immediately comment on the pending deployment. Meanwhile, officials in Middlesex-London said Sunday that a male teen who worked in a long-term care facility in the region was among the three deaths reported on the area's COVID-19 case site earlier in the weekend. Dr. Alexander Summers, associate medical officer of health for the Middlesex-London Health Unit, said he couldn't provide the exact age or any other details about the teen. But he said the person was a staff member of the long-term care home who was recently diagnosed with COVID-19 and died earlier in the week. "Through the course of our investigation, the potential exposures could be many, but certainly the long-term care home is a potential exposure for this individual," Summers said in an interview. Summers said to his knowledge, the teen was not hospitalized with COVID-19. He is the youngest person to have died after contracting the virus in the county, Summers said, noting the majority of deaths they've seen among COVID-19 patients have been in an older demographic. "It can have severe impacts on people of all ages and this story and this unfortunate and tragic situation as a reminder of that," Summers said. "Certainly, this is a very rare occurrence. It's a rare event. And the investigation continues as to understanding what exactly might have happened. However, regardless, it's a sad day." The Roberta Place Retirement Lodge long-term care home in Barrie, Ont., north of Toronto, also made headlines over the weekend after health officials said a U.K. variant of COVID-19 was behind a deadly outbreak there. On Sunday, the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit said it had learned of an additional individual with the U.K. variant within the region. The unit said that individual had close contact with a person who is also part of a COVID-19 outbreak at Bradford Valley Care Community, a long-term care home in Bradford West Gwillimbury, south of Barrie. Officials are now investigating whether that outbreak is also due to the U.K. variant. Ontario reported 2,417 new cases of COVID-19 and 50 more deaths related to the virus on Sunday. The numbers were slightly up from Saturday's 2,359 cases, though deaths declined by two from previous figures. Health Minister Christine Elliott said there were 785 new cases in Toronto, 404 in Peel Region, 215 in York Region and 121 in Niagara. Over 48,900 tests had been completed in Ontario over the past 24 hours. The province reported that 4,427 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine were administered since the province's last report, and 1,436 are hospitalized with the virus. A total of 280,573 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Ontario so far. Since the pandemic began, there have been 255,002 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario. Of those, 225,046 have recovered and 5,803 people have died. On Monday, the province plans to issue the results of a weekend-long expansion of its "inspection blitz" of big-box stores to ensure they were following COVID-19 guidelines. The workplace inspections, which started in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton areas last weekend, stretched out to Ottawa, Windsor, Niagara and Durham regions. Preliminary figures from Saturday showed inspectors went into 310 big-box stores and issued 34 tickets and 53 orders, Labour Minister Monte McNaughton said Sunday. Overall, inspectors found the stores were only at "64 per cent compliance, which the minister said wasn't good enough. "The three big issues that we're finding this weekend: masking protocols aren't being followed, in some cases; the physical distancing is still an issue in some stores; and this weekend we found that some of these big-box stores don't have a safety plan that's required of them to prevent COVID-19 from coming into the workplace," McNaughton said in an interview. (Bloomberg) -- Saudi Arabia replaced its central bank governor and said that it would more than double the size of its sovereign wealth fund by 2025 in a series of late-night announcements ahead of the crown prince’s flagship investment conference.Ahmed Alkholifey was removed from his position heading the monetary authority. He is being replaced by Fahad Al-Mubarak, who was central bank governor from 2011 to 2016. The reason for the change wasn’t provided.Al-Mubarak had most recently been a minister of state and served as the kingdom’s sherpa during its presidency last year of meetings of the Group of 20 industrialized economies. He was also previously chairman of Morgan Stanley’s Saudi Arabia unit. Alkholifey was simultaneously appointed an adviser to the royal court.The central bank and the sovereign fund are set to play an increasingly important role in powering the domestic recovery as the government looks to boost an economy hit by the twin shocks of the coronavirus pandemic and low oil prices. The change in leadership is unlikely to affect the central bank’s policy, with most levers of decision making in the kingdom controlled by Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman.Saudi Arabia’s central bank has already been one of the key vehicles for providing stimulus to the economy as the coronavirus pandemic and low oil prices hobble the private sector. The monetary authority has extended over 100 billion riyals ($27 billion) to local banks in liquidity injections and to cover the costs of loan deferrals for small businesses hit by the pandemic.Lead RoleThe central bank also controls the kingdom’s reserves, which are among the largest in the world at 1.7 trillion riyals. But its historic role as manager of the country’s savings is being eclipsed by the Public Investment Fund, Saudi Arabia’s $400 billion sovereign wealth fund chaired by the crown prince.The PIF, as the fund is known, received a $40 billion transfer from the central bank in March for new investments as it looked to capitalize on a slump in global markets caused by the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. It later disclosed it had spent about $10 billion buying stakes in blue-chip Western firms, which it sold a few months later as markets recovered.In a separate announcement on Sunday, Prince Mohammed said that the sovereign wealth fund aims manage 4 trillion riyals by 2025, making it one of the biggest government controlled investors in the world.If the PIF reaches that goal, it would eclipse the current size of China Investment Corp. and be a similar to Norway’s giant sovereign fund.Since unveiling plans in 2016 to transform the fund into one of the cornerstones of a program to reshape the Saudi economy, it’s already more than tripled in size.Under the leadership of Yasir Al-Rumayyan, a close adviser to the crown prince, the fund has shifted investment priorities from holdings in state-owned companies to building up stakes in Uber Technologies Inc. and Jio Platforms Ltd., the digital services business controlled by Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani.The PIF rejigged some of its top leadership positions last month as it prepared to play a greater role in the local economy.Investment ShowcaseThe wealth fund will host its annual investor conference within days, with the global pandemic making most of the proceedings virtual. The event has helped establish the fund’s reputation as a major source of international investment.Over the next five years, the PIF’s strategy looks set to shift homeward.
