Grindr Faces $12 Million Fine in Norway Over Data Sharing
(Bloomberg) -- Grindr LLC, maker of a popular dating app, may face a 100 million-krone ($12 million) privacy fine from Norwegian regulators for not giving users enough control over their data.Grindr users were required to accept the full privacy policy to use the free version of the app and weren’t asked specifically about sharing data with third parties, the country’s Data Protection Authority said Tuesday, citing preliminary conclusions. The proposed fine would be 10% of the company’s revenue.An important objective of European Union data protection rules “is precisely to prevent take-it-or-leave-it ‘consents,’” said Bjorn Erik Thon, director general of the DPA.“Grindr is seen as a safe space, and many users wish to be discrete,” he said. “Nonetheless, their data have been shared with an unknown number of third parties, and any information regarding this was hidden away.”Last year, the Norwegian Consumer Council filed a complaint against Grindr claiming unlawful sharing of personal data with third parties for marketing purposes. The service -- described as the world’s largest social-networking app for gay, bi, trans, and queer people -- gave user data such as location and sexual orientation to third parties involved in advertising and profiling, according to the report.Particular Protection“We believe that the fact that someone is a Grindr user speaks to their sexual orientation, and therefore this constitutes special category data that merit particular protection,” the regulator said.Los Angeles-based Grindr said in a statement that the Norwegian case dates back to 2018 and does “not reflect Grindr’s current privacy policy or practices.” The company said it has retained valid legal consent from all of its users in the European Economic Area on multiple occasions.Under EU rules, data fines can be as much as 4% of a company’s revenue or 20 million euros, whichever is higher. 1st private space crew paying $55M each to fly to station
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — The first private space station crew was introduced Tuesday: Three men who are each paying $55 million to fly on a SpaceX rocket. They'll be led by a former NASA astronaut now working for Axiom Space, the Houston company that arranged the trip for next January. “This is the first private flight to the International Space Station. It’s never been done before," said Axiom's chief executive and president Mike Suffredini, a former space station program manager for NASA. While mission commander Michael Lopez-Alegria is well known in space circles, “the other three guys are just people who want to be able to go to space, and we’re providing that opportunity," Suffredini told The Associated Press. The first crew will spend eight days at the space station, and will take one or two days to get there aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule following liftoff from Cape Canaveral. Russia has been in the off-the-planet tourism business for years, selling rides to the International Space Station since 2001. Other space companies like Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin plan to take paying customers on up-and-down flights lasting just minutes. These trips — much more affordable with seats going for hundreds of thousands versus millions — could kick off this year. Axiom's first customers include Larry Connor, a real estate and tech entrepreneur from Dayton, Ohio, Canadian financier Mark Pathy and Israeli businessman Eytan Stibbe, a close friend of Israel's first astronaut Ilan Ramon, who was killed in the space shuttle Columbia accident in 2003. “These guys are all very involved and doing it for kind of for the betterment of their communities and countries, and so we couldn’t be happier with this makeup of the first crew because of their drive and their interest," Suffredini said. Each of these first paying customers intends to perform science research in orbit, he said, along with educational outreach. Lopez-Alegria, a former space station resident and spacewalking leader, called the group a “collection of pioneers." Tom Cruise was mentioned last year as a potential crew member; NASA top officials confirmed he was interested in filming a movie at the space station. There was no word Tuesday on whether Cruise will catch the next Axiom flight. Suffredini declined to comment. Each of the private astronauts had to pass medical tests and will get 15 weeks of training, according to Suffredini. The 70-year-old Connor will become the second-oldest person to fly in space, after John Glenn's shuttle flight in 1998 at age 77. He'll also serve under Lopez-Alegria as the capsule pilot. Axiom plans about two private missions a year to the space station. It also is working to launch its own live-in compartments to the station beginning in 2024. Widespread internet outages hit northeast U.S.
Internet users the northeast U.S. reported widespread outages Tuesday. Verizon reported a fiber cut in Brooklyn via Twitter, although it’s not clear if that issue is responsible for the entire outage. The internet service provider didn't have any estimate when the problem spot would be fixed. Neither Verizon nor Comcast, another major internet service provider, immediately responded to requests for comment. People posting on Twitter reported having issues connecting with various online services stretching from Washington to Boston. That densely populated region includes key U.S. government services as well as major financial companies such as Fidelity Investments. The outage is affecting major internet and cloud providers as well as major sites such as Google and Facebook. Amazon, whose web services division powers a wide ranges of online services, indicated its network isn't the cause of the problem. “We are investigating connectivity issues with an internet provider, mainly affecting the East Coast of the United States, outside of the (Amazon Web Services) Network," the company wrote in a Tuesday morning post. “We are investigating the issue with the external provider.” Associated Press, The Associated Press

Who goes first? Vaccine rollout forces stark moral choices
HOOD RIVER, Ore. — As COVID-19 surged, retired attorney Susan Crowley did some simple math and discovered a chilling fact: people over 60 made up 91% of coronavirus deaths in Oregon. So the 75-year-old was shocked when the state started vaccinating teachers this week before senior citizens in a push to get children back into classrooms. “I look at these figures and I am literally afraid. It’s not just a question of missing beers with my friends. It’s a question of actually being afraid that if I am not careful, I will die,” she said. “The thing that is so upsetting to me is that seniors don’t matter, the elderly don’t matter. And it's painful to hear that implication.” Democratic Gov. Kate Brown has defended her decision, choking up in a recent news conference because she said she “knows of families where 12- and 13-year-olds are attempting suicide” because of social isolation. Meanwhile, her sister, a cancer survivor, is being asked return to her Minnesota classroom without a vaccine, Brown told The Associated Press. “No matter what you do, people aren't happy,” she said. “The teachers in Minnesota are furious at the governor because they are doing seniors first. And here, the seniors are furious at me because I am doing teachers first. There are no right answers, and there are no easy decisions.” With a mass vaccination campaign underway, the U.S. is facing a moral dilemma as officials from California to New Jersey decide who gets the shots first. Everyone from the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions to communities of colour and front-line workers are clamouring for the scarce vaccine — and each group has a compelling argument for why they should get priority. It has local health officials and volunteer advisory committees doing ethical gymnastics the likes of which haven't been seen since the military's rationing of a new wonder drug — penicillin — during World War II or the decision to give white men first access to life-saving dialysis machines in the 1960s, when the new technology was in short supply. Hospitals and medical professionals make such moral decisions when triaging emergency room patients in a disaster or ranking recipients for organ transplants, said Courtney Campbell, an ethics professor at Oregon State University. But what's happening now is on such a large scale that ordinary people — not just public health officials — are reckoning with questions of who is most important to society and why, he said. “We’re being asked to emphasize some of our shared national values. ... We’re being called to treat other persons as equals, and that means equals in the sight of the law, but also moral equals, so that matters of privilege or wealth or socioeconomic status get levelled out,” he said. “This is a time when we get tested as to whether we're going to walk the talk.” While the nationwide priority has been inoculating health care workers and those in nursing homes, the decisions get more difficult deeper into the vaccine rollout. Federal guidance says states should prioritize the elderly, front-line essential workers and those with underlying medical conditions in the next phases, but ultimately it’s up to state and local officials to decide how to distribute the shots. Complicating matters is the nation's vaccine distribution has been marked by disarray and confusion. States have complained about shortages and inadequate deliveries that have forced them to cancel mass vaccination events and appointments. Originally, Oregon's governor said teachers and residents over 65 would both be eligible this week but rolled that back because supplies weren't there. Now, the state's vaccine advisory committee is wrestling with how to prioritize the next groups. In emotional, tense exchanges at a recent meeting, members debated the hypothetical merits of giving the vaccine to a tribal elder who's one of the last speakers of their language versus a teacher or a migrant worker who puts food on people's tables. Some advocated vaccinating all people of colour first, regardless of age or health, while others favoured giving the shots to those with certain chronic conditions, regardless of race. Oregon is focused on fairness in vaccine access for marginalized communities. Other states, like New Jersey, raised eyebrows by putting smokers toward the front of the line. In Mississippi, authorities are trying to address disparities that show 70% of the vaccine has gone to white residents by establishing a drive-through clinic at a stadium in Jackson, a majority Black city. Oregon lawmakers of colour wrote a letter urging the vaccine advisory committee to prioritize low-income seniors, inmates and front-line workers instead of solely focusing on racial minorities, saying doing so would reach many people of colour. “We are concerned about the way this is being framed and how these groups ... are pitted against each other and against BIPOC communities in general,” the letter said, using an acronym for Black, Indigenous and people of colour. Dr. Kalani Raphael, a kidney specialist at Oregon Health & Science University and a Native Hawaiian on the advisory committee, said minority communities' health care experiences are often invisible, particularly with COVID-19. He pointed to the death of a friend, a Utah community organizer, who got the virus after working to improve health care access for other Pacific Islanders. “She was getting better. And then she just dropped dead at home, right in front of her kids,” said Raphael, his voice heavy with emotion. “These stories, to me, re-centre the problem in these communities that are invisible and give them the support and attention and seriousness they deserve." While Oregon health officials grapple with who will be eligible next, vaccines started Monday for teachers and early childhood educators. More than 90% of students have been studying online for nearly 11 months. Jennifer Dale, a mother of three from the Portland suburb of Lake Oswego, has organized rallies and written letters in a push to return to in-person learning. But teachers getting priority over seniors made her reevaluate. “I can support my kids and their education if it means my parents continue to be prioritized for a vaccine, because they are much more likely to have negative consequences from COVID than a young healthy teacher,” she said. Leslie Bienen, a Portland mother of two, also has seen her children struggling with online school. When she heard teachers would be vaccinated before seniors, she was torn. “It’s so complicated.
