Giovanni Pernice breaks silence on Maura Higgins split

Giovanni Pernice from Strictly Come Dancing has broken his silence on his split from Maura Higgins, after four months together.

The Love Island star and dancer started dating in the summer, making things official with a couple of loved up Instagram posts. But after fans noticed they'd wiped their grids of all traces of each other, a source told The Sun in early October, "It's all over for now. Maura's absolutely devastated.

"Pals are hoping that they can patch things up. But only time will tell whether they'll work things out as Giovanni is so busy. He's been focusing on Strictly, training his celeb partner Rose [Ayling Ellis] 24/7, and they've become really good friends. He's even been learning sign language from Rose, showing it off on social media."

Now, after viewers speculated that his Strictly dance routine was aimed at Maura, Gio has spoken out about the break up for the first time. He wrote on Instagram Stories:

"Firstly, great relationships with great people can come to a natural end. This has been the case for me recently. There was absolutely no wrong-doing and this should be the end of any speculation.

"While I respect and understand the interest in my personal life, wouldn't it be fantastic to instead use this space to raise awareness of subjects and issues that need attention?

"My eyes have been opened to so many things during my career, bu I am learning so much from this series of Strictly. This show has highlighted many important conversations for different communities and increased representation. These are the conversations which deserve the time, energy and recognition."

Giovanni is likely referring to the fact his dance partner Rose is deaf and uses sign language. The pair have shared an insight into Gio learning sign language on social media, while Rose also ensured the BBC added a sign language interpreter to the show on iPlayer.

Here's to hoping everyone involved is doing OK, eh?
