Giles Scott remains in a strong position for gold going into the medal race of the Finn class.

The defending Olympic champion had moved away from Olympic racing to be a central figure in Ben Ainslie’s America’s Cup team.

But despite doubling up in both events in 2021, Scott has dominated the Olympic regatta with six wins in just 10 races.

He sealed that sixth win comfortably in his opening race of the day and then finished seventh in the second and final race on Sunday meaning he is guaranteed a medal.

It leaves him on 28 points with the only realistic challengers Zsombor Berecz and Joan Cardona Mendez on 37 and 39 respectively. The medal race takes place on Tuesday.

After the day’s racing, Scott said: “I won a race and got a seventh which, failing any catastrophe, guarantees me a medal which is an amazing place to be. But it’s not over. I just have to try and go and win the final race.

“I had to put in a good showing today. The guys are stacked up behind me and I am not the only one putting together an amazing series. I think go back four years there were three people who could have won the regatta with a day to spare so I’m happy leading them out going into the medal race after putting together an amazing week and grateful I’ve managed to do that. I’ve probably sailed the best week of my life I think and hopefully I can finish it off.”

Elsewhere on the water in Enoshima, there was another guaranteed medal for John Gimson and Anna Burnet, who have an insurmountable lead over fourth place.

Scott’s British teammate Alison Young finished eighth in the medal race of the Laser Radial class to leave her in 10th place overall.
