Gas prices drop for fifth week as Ontario cities get biggest discounts

Gas prices fell an average of 3.5 cents per litre of regular fuel across Canada over the past seven days, marking five consecutive weeks of declines.

Northern Ontario cities booked the biggest discounts, led by North Bay, Timmins, and Thunder Bay. Abbotsford, B.C. and Vancouver were among the few markets where prices increased. Those cities booked 4.2 and 3.6 cents per litre gains, respectively, according to data from Kalibrate.

Inflation was in sharp focus this week, as the Bank of Canada cut its trend-setting interest rate for a third time in a row. While inflation continues to trend towards the central bank's two per cent target, a new survey suggests rising prices and borrowing costs are causing drivers to keep their vehicles longer, while paying more to maintain them.

According to J.D. Power Canada, the average cost of a visit to a dealership has risen to $465 from $432 a year ago, while a similar trip to an independent shop has increased to $273 from $262. Researchers say more frequent visits to dealerships and shops for repairs imply owners are fixing their vehicles rather than buying new ones.

“With inflation pushing auto repair costs upward and interest rates making larger-ticket items like mortgage payments and new-vehicle purchases more expensive, owners are being hit with a ‘double whammy’ and have to make different decisions in order to balance their budgets,” J.D. Ney, automotive practice lead at J.D. Power Canada, stated in a news release on Thursday.
