From a gallon of milk to a can of Coke — how prices of everyday items have risen

How much more are you paying for essential items like bread, milk, eggs and gasoline in the fall and winter of 2021 compared to 2020?

Here’s a comparison of some items most of us consume. Unless indicated, figures are according to The People History, which tracks prices across an array of goods.

And note that prices may vary as stores may offer sales or BOGOs on select items and, conversely, some may be pricier depending on where you shop or fill your gas tank.

Bread: Sara Lee White: In 2021, you’re paying $2.54. In 2020, you paid $2.08.

Gallon of milk: Prairie Farms: In 2021, you’re paying $4.77. In 2020, you paid $4.12. According to the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service, the average cost of a conventional gallon of milk in Miami was at its lowest point in May 2021 at $3.39. In November it was $3.73.

Dozen eggs: The average price for one dozen eggs was $1.82 in October 2021 compared to $1.84 in September, according to data released by the U.S. Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics in November. In 2020, the average was $1.51. If you’re curious, a dozen eggs in 1980 cost 84 cents but adjusted for inflation to 2021 dollars that would be $2.82, according to the U.S. Inflation Calculator.

A 24-pack of Coca-Cola: In 2021, you’re paying $2.98 for all of that carbonation and sugar. In 2020, you paid $2.48. Burp.

Folger’s Classic Roast Coffee: In 2021, you’re paying $7.56 for the one-pound and 14.5-ounce container. In 2020, you paid $6.96.

Toilet paper rolls: In 2021, you’re paying $4 for a four-pack of Scott’s. In 2020, you paid $3.82.

One pound of Roma tomatoes: In 2021, you’re paying 98 cents. In 2020, you paid 88 cents.

Kellogg’s Corn Flakes: In 2021, you’re paying $3.28. In 2020 and 2019, you paid the same $3.28, according to The People History. But you’re paying more for the milk to make it wash down tastier.

A 4-pound bag of Domino sugar: In 2021, you’re paying $2.08. In 2020, you paid $1.74.

A pound of ground beef: In 2021, you’re paying $5.96. In 2020, you paid $5.24.

Gallon of gas: In Miami, regular gas prices were averaging $3.33 as of Dec. 2, a 1-cent increase from November, and a $1.17 jump from last year’s $2.16, according to AAA.
