Gains in Triple Digits for TSX Tuesday

Canada's main stock index inched higher on Tuesday, as shares of precious metal miners gained on the back of higher gold prices.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index gained 108.53 points to greet noon Tuesday at 15,866.27

The Canadian dollar shed 0.08 cents at 75.48 cents U.S.

The largest percentage gainers on the TSX were precious metal miners Pretium Resources, which jumped $1.19, or 12.4%, to $10.77, followed by Semafo, which rose 20 cents, or 6.3%, to $3.39.

In the technology sector, Constellation Software, popping $3.69, or 3.4%, to $1,132.00 and Shopify, hiking $6.11, or 2.6%, to $242.16.

Transcontinental Inc fell 62 cents, or 2.8%, to $21.29.

ON BAYSTREET

The TSX Venture Exchange gained 4.7 points to 620.63

All but one of the 12 TSX subgroups were stronger by noon, as gold gained 3.4%, while materials and information technology climbed 1.8% each.

Only health-care missed the festivities, down 1.2%.

ON WALLSTREET

Stocks rose on Tuesday, erasing losses from earlier in the session as shares of Walmart outperformed.

The Dow Jones Industrials came out of their shell and moved higher 31.43 points midday Tuesday to 25,914.68,

The S&P 500 gained 6.08 points to 2,781.68, as the consumer staples sector rose

The NASDAQ Composite gained 23.84 points to 7,496.25, as Amazon and Netflix both rose more than 1%.
WalMart shares rose more than 3% after the company reported better-than-expected earnings. The retailer also said e-commerce sales grew by 43% in the previous quarter.

Talks between the U.S. and China are set to continue this week in Washington. Both countries have until early March to come up with a deal.

Otherwise, additional U.S. tariffs on Chinese products could take effect. President Donald Trump indicated recently, however, he would be willing to push back the deadline.

Prices for the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury gained a bit, lowering yields to 2.64% from Friday’s 2.66%. Treasury prices and yields move in opposite directions.

Oil prices gathered 42 cents to $56.01 U.S. a barrel.

Gold prices strengthened $19.40 to $1,341.50 U.S. an ounce.
