Yahoo Finance ‘Frozen’ and Other Top-Grossing Princess Movies
Walt Disney’s Frozen has become a cultural phenomenon that’s earned two Oscars and encouraged little girls to belt out the movie’s hit song “Let it Go.” Their moms, meanwhile, are exasperated that official Frozen merchandise has been sold out for weeks. Disney recently announced that the movie is now the highest grossing animated film of all time, with $1 billion in ticket sales worldwide.
Frozen tells of a fearless princess, Anna, who sets off on a journey to find her sister, Elsa, whose freezing powers have trapped their kingdom in an eternal winter. (Sounds like the last four months of the Weather Channel report.)

In its recent princess movies, including Frozen, Disney has portrayed heroic young women who are more set on saving the world, or their kingdoms, than in finding Prince Charming, even if in most cases they do end up finding love.A list of the top-grossing princess movies based on U.S. and Canadian ticket sales, and provided by Box Office Mojo, includes some of these tough modern princesses, such as Merida of Brave and Rapunzel of Tangled:
1-Frozen, released in 2013, has earned $399 million in domestic ticket sales.
2-Brave, set in Scotland, was released in 2012 and earned $237 million.
3-Beauty and the Beast, released in 1991, brought in $219 million.
4-Aladdin, released in 1992, earned $217 million.
5-Tangled, released in 2010, brought in $201 million.

But the classic princesses such as Snow White, Cinderella or Aurora of Sleeping Beauty are still in the hearts of little girls and movie goers. The same list of the highest grossing princess movies, adjusted for inflation, shows that Snow White has actually been a bigger hit than Anna and Elsa. In this list, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which was released in 1937 and earned more than $1 billion in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales, holds the first position, followed by Cinderella, Frozen, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast.
