French Fashion Brand Says Its Hotel Won't Be Open To 'Chinese Tourists'

Zadig & Voltaire, a French fashion brand, is taking over a mansion on the Left Bank of Paris to turn into a boutique hotel.

Sounds nice right? Well, who exactly would the hotel cater for? Here's what the brand's founder, Thierry Gillier, reportedly told Woman's Wear Daily last week:

“It will be a slightly private hotel, not open to everybody, with 40 rooms. We are going to select guests. It won’t be open to Chinese tourists, for example. There is a lot of demand in Paris — many people are looking for quiet with a certain privacy.”

That "Chinese tourists" comment, understandably, provoked a reaction. WWD has now amended the article so that no mention of ethnicity is made, but the comments were picked up by The Cut and Styleite, and appear to have made their way to China.

One popular blogger, @BagSnob, tweeted, "I (along w/all Chinese) am not welcome at Zadig et Voltaire hotels, so I'll stop shopping there" and Abe Sauer at Brand Channel points an image currently being passed around on Weibo:

Gillier should probably be hoping no "human flesh search" is conducted on him...
