Former Toronto police chief appointed special advisor to Ontario Place

·1 min read

Toronto's former police chief has been appointed special adviser to the province for its redevelopment of Ontario Place.

The government says Mark Saunders will offer input on plans for the former waterfront theme park in Toronto.

The province closed the park to the public in 2012 due to falling revenues and tight finances.

The current Progressive Conservative government has said it wants to make the space that first opened in 1971 an impressive attraction.

A government news release says Saunders will consult with the City of Toronto, local stakeholders and Indigenous communities.

Saunders faced criticism in his tenure as police chief from both the LGBTQ and Black communities over his handling of various cases.

He retired from the police force last year, and the search for his permanent replacement is ongoing.
