Ford recall over faulty seatbelts affects 35,600 Canadian cars

Ford is recalling 680,000 mid-sized sedans, including 35,614 in Canada, because of seatbelts that could fail in a crash.

The recall covers 2013 to 2016 Ford Fusion, 2013 to 2015 Lincoln MKZ and 2015 and the 2016 Ford Mondeo, a European version of the Fusion that isn't sold in Canada,

The cars were made at its Hermosillo Assembly Plant in Mexico and its Flat Rock plant in Michigan.

In a recall notice Friday, Ford said it knows of two accidents and two injuries associated with the seatbelt failures.

The company said high temperatures generated by the crash could affect the seatbelt anchor pretensioner, the device that removes the slack from a seatbelt during an accident.

The seatbelt could then fail to adequately restrain people in the driver or passenger seat in these vehicles, it said.

Dealers will inject a coating to protect the pretensioner from increased temperatures at no cost to the customer.

Ford issued a second recall for 2017 Ford Fusion vehicles to replace the second-row left-rear seat back frame, which may have been built with improperly welded pivot pins.

It said only two Canadian vehicles are affected, out of 27 worldwide.
