This Five-Star Hotel in Scotland Gets a Multimillion-Dollar Renovation

Careful to respect Gleneagles Hotel’s stunning Scottish architecture and charming scenery, the new owner (London-based developer Ennismore) is funding an ongoing multimillion-dollar renovation. The designers are putting a fresh contemporary spin on the historic property. Originally opened in 1924 on a sea of rolling green hills in the Perthshire countryside, Gleneagles will offer 232 luxury bedrooms and suites, more than 20 outdoor activities, an award-winning spa by Espa, four restaurants, and three championship golf courses.

The first phase of the renovation was completed in May 2016 and saw the debut of a brand-new bar in the Dormy Clubhouse, designed by British design house Macaulay Sinclair. The intimate atmosphere is perfect for socializing with friends over a pint or simply dining on a selection of shared plates. Similar to the Dormy, but with an emphasis on the three staples of country living (hunting, fishing, and shooting), the hotel’s main bar was refurbished by David Collins Studio. Fashioned into an inviting gathering place, its guests can enjoy afternoon tea or sip on a single malt while regaling fellow guests with tales of the day’s adventures. For those in search of a gastronomic experience, Scotland’s only Michelin two-star restaurant, Andrew Fairlie, is not to be missed. Blending the best of Scottish and French cuisine, Fairlie’s signature dish is the smoked lobster, which gathers its powerful flavor from a 12-hour infusion over whisky barrels.

Internationally renowned designer Goddard Littlefair will lend his flair to 30 of Gleneagles’ guest rooms, reimagining their detailing, fabrics, and colors to create a warm and welcoming country-estate ambience. Fixtures and fittings will likewise be renovated, including the addition of almost 875 yards of marble dado and baseboards, and more than 200 light fixtures in custom-made antique brass and cut glass. Over 1,090 yards of wool and velvet fabrics from the Isle Mill (a 200-year-old Scottish weaving company) will dress cushions and throws.

The hotel will remain open throughout the entire renovation, with plans in place to guarantee guest satisfaction and minimal disruption. (gleneagles.com)
