The first omicron variant COVID case confirmed in Mississippi, health department says

The first case of the COVID-19 omicron variant was reported in Mississippi on Monday, the state’s health department confirmed.

The Mississippi State Department of Health said the case in a person who recently traveled the New York. The individual was fully vaccinated and was not hospitalized.

“We were prepared for the appearance of this variant in Mississippi, and we need to remember that delta is still a very active variant of COVID-19 currently in the state, as well,” MSDH State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said in the press release.

Dobbs says the best protection against omicron and delta COVID variants are vaccines and the booster shot.

“Vaccines remain the best public health measure to protect people from COVID-19, slow the transmission rate, and reduce the likelihood of new variants emerging. COVID-19 vaccines are highly effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalizations, and death,” he said.

Now, 47% of Mississippians are recorded having have received both shots, with 19% having received a booster. On the Coast, Harrison County and Jackson County are 42% fully vaccinated and Hancock is 34% vaccinated. National vaccination rates average 59%.

The health department confirmed 982 new COVID cases on Monday, with three deaths reported.

On the Coast, there were 80 new cases and no new deaths over the weekend — slightly higher in positives from recent weeks when numbers were stabilized.

The spike comes as health officials have noticed increased positivity around the state.

“COVID-19 has been killing up to 50 Mississippians a week recently. If COVID-19 were a person, we’d be urgently defending our families and neighborhoods,” MSDH tweeted last week.

The health department also signaled last week a “concerning upward trend” in hospitalizations from COVID around the state.

“For every seven of us hospitalized for COVID-19, only six will live,” MSDH tweeted.
